How long does it take you guys to get a mount back?
« on: Jan 11, 2010, 09:07 AM »
I have been checking around here because I have a Crappie I want to have mounted.  I guess I'm just a bit shocked at the time frames I am being given.  I mean... crap, I have never waited that long for anything!

What is considered a normal or acceptable timeline for getting a fish mounted?

Thanks

As much as a year !
You have to remember that there may be several fish and mammals ahead of you and they would come first in most reputable shops . A lot of the taxidermist's are full time employees of companies and do taxidermy as a hobby or to supplament their income so they dont get to do it for 8 hours a day and have a fast turn around time .
Length of time shouldn't be a concern , quality should  .... look at some pictures and show room work of the artist you would like to use before you ask how long he takes to do his mounts and that might explain why it takes so long to get what you pay for .

From what I've seen a year is normal.  Some even more.

yikes  ???   A  year is what I am being told as well.    I can understand quality thing, but the time frame still seems to be joke.  It didnt' take half that long to build my frickin house and yes.. they builder was building alot more than one.  Just seems like way too long to wait.  oh well, it is what it is I guess.

I hate waiting!!!

Leads me to a discussion that I've been having with a buddy.  Has anyone done the "picture" or "dimension" taxidermy done?  I think about it then would always look at the fish and say that isn't the real thing.  Is it that much cheaper?

A year doesn't sound out of line to me. I have had a couple that were ready in six months. I have been waiting since September on 1986 for a Lake Trout to be finished. Now, that is out of line. I think that fish has probably been swimming in a dumpster for quite a while by now.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

It all depends on the taxidermist a good one will take longer because they allready have work backed up.

As a retired taxidermist I gotta add my 2 cents. If your taxidermist has nothing else to do but your fish ,he could turm it around in about 4 weeks..But as stated, if the shop is worth a dang , it already has a back log that will come before you. Also depending on how much time the taxidermist dedicates to his business will directly effect the turn around as well ,he has to have a life as well. we had a full time shop working 8 to 12 hours a day and tried very hard for a 6 month turn around but it didnt always happen..At this time of year the shop is swamped with deer that have to be attended to also..

Ok Im off my soap box....Bottom line a year is not all that bad...

Trout and other greasy fish somtime take longer and for good reason ,they have to sit and dry and what we call grease out..before they can be finished.

Dang, a pickerel must have to grease out for a year the slimy buggers.  Of course probably not much call for a pick to be mounted.

1 year min (I'm still waiting 33" walleye), if the guy is good you will wait and it is an art. My friend had one done in about 5 months and after 2 years the thing is fading and it likes like oil running down it. I know it seems forever but most likely it will be worth it, Does he guarantee his work?

The one guy only does fish and nothing else and he is at a year out and charges 13 bucks an inch.  The other guy who also does deer and everything else is about 9 months out and is 12 bucks an inch.   I guess to have to spend that and wait that long, I might wait for a nicer fish.

I took a 11inch bluegill that weighed 1lb4ozs, to a fella up in kalamazoo, he had it done in 6 weeks and it cost $100.00. That was 10yrs ago and it still looks good'.
