Waxworms?
« on: Dec 29, 2009, 04:12 PM »
Anybody know of a bait shop that sells them?  I've mail ordered some, but would like to have some on hand if this cold snap brings some safe ice.

Thanks for the info guys.  I've been able to find them at pet stores before, but haven't had good luck getting many live ones.

Does anyone in New England use waxworms or is it just a Midwest and South thing?

I just bought some wax worms and red maggots at Vados bait express - do a search. They are reasonable and they arrived alive. Worth a shot! as for who uses 'em, I'm from North Dakota, now live in South Dakota, and have used 'em all my life.

I'm originally from Iowa where you could find waxworms at any baitshop or even at a lot of department stores.  Bait shops also carried them where I was stationed in North Carolina.  Here in New England I hate asking for them, the person behind the counter either has no idea what I'm talking about and/or lights into me about how waxworms are no good as bait and I need to buy some shiners @ $5/dozen ::)

I buy them mail order from Beaver Bait.  I think they are in Wisconson or Ill.  They arrive a couple days after ordering and will last for months if kept in a cool corner of the basement.  Not in the fridge.  Been ordering them this way for years.  Only had one shippment arrive dead.  They had gotten froze along the way.  Called them and they sent another batch, NC  Google them.  FM

FM- That's the company that I mail ordered from.  Glad to hear your positive review.

Looks like there is a small demand for waxworms here in RI.  Now if the baitshops would just catch on.

Jumperdoc,
I've asked for them over the last few years but they only stock mealworms.  You can get a lot of mileage out of the waxworms.  Can't get spikes around here either.  I moved here 10 years ago from Upstate NY / Vermont.  There is not enough ice season here for the bait shops to stock up on ice gear.  Maybe this winter will have a longer season.  There are quite a few ponds I'd like to try out.  FM

I could be mistaken but I think big bear ordered a small amount of wax worms last year. I don't reccomend going there though - the old women isn't so nice and I've had a bone to pick ever since I bought a pack of worms in the discount bin, liked them, and returned to buy 2 more packs and she charged me full price for them. "No, all those packs of 3 year old rubber worms are in that box because theres no room for them on the shelf, not because they are discounted... even though you paid a dollar for one of them yesterday."

So in essence I guess your better off with getting them through the mail.

EAD:  I know exactly who you're talking about.  She let me know that waxworms are a terrible bait... Amazing how upper midwest ice fishermen continue to catch scores of fish daily with them ::)

fishing girl:  I usually pick up some shiners if I plan on setting up some tipups.  I usually am jigging for panfish with the vex so the shiners generally available are a little large for what I target.  Also I like to move a lot (I'll drill dozens of holes until I find fish) and would rather have a tub of waxies in my pocket than a bucket of shiners to drag around.

I agree.  Does anyone jig in RI?  I spent 20 days on the ice last year and only saw tipups (traps as the locals say).
