flip over style vs cabin style shanty
« on: Dec 22, 2009, 07:11 AM »
I'm thinking of a new shanty this year and would like the help of the ice fishing community to help make a informed choice leaning towards the frabil excursion but weight is a factor for pulling by hand on early ice any info on set up , durability and functionality between the two styles i look forward to all your replies

Weight was a major thing for me. I was looking at the Clam 2000 and the Frabill Refuge.
I went with the Frabill due to more room.

well my clam was cabin style

the floor was what i liked

when the ice is slush your stuff goes on the floor it's not soaked

the weight was not really a problem for me and or my kids or dog that have pulled in into breakneck many of times (1 mile trail in)

i just replaced it with a bigger frabill cabin (have not used it yet)thanks to CT. Outfitters giving me a great deal

what i didnt like with the clam was when your pulling it, if you bungee your stuff to the top side it never really stayed so i would have to carry or load onto another sled
if pulling only the clam it is fine     just could never load it up with a lot of gear securely ive tried bungees, ropes and found it was easier to just load a second sled
on smooth ice i could load it but we only get smooth ice few a times

speed wise the clam set up pretty fast just one person job 5 min or less

but it's not a fast as a pull over style

hope this helps

I've had both types, a pull over type (Genz scout plastic tub and the earlier wooden floor type) and the cabin type (3 man I don't remember what brand).
They all pull good when they are on hard ice with little or no snow.  But once there is more then a couple inches or the slush sticks on the wooden underside, whoooeee are they hard to pull.
Since I move alot and mainly jig, I like the Genz scout with plastic floor.  I've worn the floor thru in a couple places so screwed a set of old skis on the bottom and give the floor a coating of wax before the season.  Keeps the snow from sticking.  If you fish with tipups and go with a crew, the cabin type are good.  Either type will heat right up with a Coleman lantern.  FM

I've always stayed away from the cabin styles... I move around too much and some of the places I fish require a hike. The cabins just aren't as easy to transport. The flip overs have a big enough sled that I can fit all my crap it it and drag fairly easy. That being said, I bought myself a 6 man Frabill hub style (pop up) this year and so far love it. They are far cheaper than the other styles (yes, I have them all in stock at the shop  ;D ) You can't believe how quick they set up. I took some video of the set up the other day: Check it out here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8X8i_Wdv1s

thanks to all of you that sent your insight on this topic Blaine thanks for that you tube link that was helpful if you know anyone with the excursion i would love there input on that unit as it seems to be the way I'm leaning right now but cost is a issue given the time of year as I'm a mason and work is done once the snow comes thanks again and hope to meet all you guys Jan 16th  17th

yes Blaine the hubs are nice just bought the largest one from Cabelas and sent a letter to  Dick and Jim Cabela about the material they use on them i opened 4 of them and all had little holes in the walls were there was no stitching i had my heart set on the clam corp command post but couldn't find them even got a hold of the company so all stay away from Cabelas hub  shanty's must say they gave me 10% off and a 3 year warranted on it

I would go with neither.   Get the new hub style.  they are simple to set up and take down and light too.  150 bucks for the clam 2man.   They have a much better ancor system.  the cabin style which packs up as a sled are bears to pull on anything other than glare ice!

I have had my Clam Fishtrap Guide for 3 years and love it.  I prefer the flip over style, easier to set up and alot sturdier in the wind.  The sled base and two swivel chair make it really comfortable.
Ain't nothing to it but to do it!!
