Jigs and Rods
« on: Dec 17, 2009, 06:11 PM »
Does anyone have any recommendations for Jigs and rods? I have a lot of size tens and a 27" rod for 2-6 lb. test.
Any info will help!

I carry 6 rods for anything from gills to walleye set ups each have different lines/actions and lenths depending on their application. My gill rods are 21"? little short for me but they work, fitted with spring bobbers and 2# test. Perch rods are 24-26" ml actions with 4# one with a spring bobber one for jigging spoons. My walleye rods are 28" M I think with 4# on the slipbobber 6# on the jigging/deadstick. Still working on the perfect combos for each situation, a never ending quest since they come out with new rods faster than I can make the money to buy them all   ;D  I don't belive in a 1 rod fits all for anything, maybe why I have 50-60 combos lining my walls.

I have always carried a bunch of rods with me and have found more and more that I rarely actually use more than one or two of them the majority of the time.

I make all my gear, and currently carry 6 rods and 2 tip ups.  I have 2 all glass jigging rods, one ultra light (18") and 1 light (28").  I also carry 2 ultra light composite graphite rods (24" and 30") for jigging or dead sticking and 2 lite graphite rods (30") for jigging walleyes.  My tip ups are rigged light.  I can handle anything up to 10lbs without too much trouble.
For jigs I run the full gambit of everything under the sun from marmmoska up to the biggest chubbie darters and buckshots, airplanes and pimples.  I carry a lot of plastics as well and fish some homemade and hand tied stuff heavy too.  One of my big hitters is a shrimp hook with 2 tungsten beads soldered on and painted.  Some of these I wrap with lead wire for a heavy jig with a segmented look.  I also use the 1/100 and 1/80 oz round heads tied maribou or jig fly style, and short.  Last but not least, I carry a pint of E&J for emergencies.
My newest project is a casting style walleye rod I'm putting together.  It's still on the drawing board, but the idea is to get power and sensitivity while being able to fight a big fish on a baitcasting drag.  We'll see how it turns out.

i use a Custom S-120-24" M rod, a "Blazer Stix" rod that's 24" M and a "Frabill" 26" Light. Is this a good combo?
(pardon, the last post i made i said 28", but it is 26") Also, i use size ten ant jigs and silver and gold jigs, and many others. Just wondering what the best is for CRAPPIE, BLUEGILL, and WALLEYE.

THANKS

Winder,
To be honest, you should catch plenty of fish with that arsenal.  I caught a lot of walleyes on hard baits last year, with my number one bait being a forage minnow and number 2 being a chubby darter.  The biggest i got last year was on a #12 pink swim jig with half of a honey worm on it while fishing for crappies.  For me, the biggest single critical factor is a flasher.  I love my vex, and would fish a vienna sausage on a snoopy pole as long as I had my vex rather than a top of the line custom rod and fresh bait but no flasher.
