Tension setting on Polar Tip-Ups????
« on: Dec 16, 2009, 02:39 PM »
Does anyone know how to set for higher tension on the Polar-type tip-ups?

I bought the Bass Pro Shops knock-offs last year 'cause I don't have the patience for wooden tip-ups and they were half the price of the HT Enterprise Polar Tip-Ups.  They served me well and I'd say, for their price, they're tough to beat.

My only problem, is that I was fishing for tiger musky at Oxford with small tiger trout that I bought at Hwy. Sports, and the trout would often trip the flag.  I tried messing with the screw on the spool and the nut on top of the shaft, but no effect.  Does anyone know how to up the tension for larger bait, or am I gonna need a new type of tip-up to fish with tiger trout this year?

Feedback would rock.

attach a downrigger or planerboard clip. set it or get one with the right amout of tension so the trout wont trip it, but a bigger fish like a pike or musky will.

Hi Mark, Gary has the right idea for really big baits. But you can loosen the set screw on the shaft and lift it higher up and then set the flag under the "T" where the groove is, just be sure the "T" turns against the flag and the flag pushes against the shaft - pushing the flag down before releasing it, that will make it harder to trip. If you put the flag on the wrong side of the shaft it trips too easily, this depends on which direction the line is spooled.
