Big lake wind and quick fish
« on: Dec 21, 2009, 12:16 AM »
This weekend I gave big lake a try, first time since I was in High school so that makes it about 18 years ago. I thought I was at burnt point but come to think of it there where no ice shanties or other people around fishing. I was on the north side of the lake and there was a rounded point that had a steep hill and burnt trees on it. Also looked to be a new cabin a little to the East. As for fishing I did not arrive till noon then it was a bit breeze and when it tried to pop up the quick fish mother nature attempted to take it from me before I could drill the ice screws in the corners. I have had the Eskimo quick fish for a few years but that was the first time I had tried to set it up on my own in the wind and it is a bit difficult, now I know why the instructions say to stake the corners first. I should have skipped the ice fishing tied the shanty off to me and used it as an ice sail on ice road. As far as the fishing gos tried all the jigs I had in about fifteen feet of water and only caught one small bow about 12 inches. since it was only in the single digits and windy and stayed in the shanty next to the heater. There is enough ice to travel any where you want on the lake, although I think I would stay away from creeks. there was about 9 inches o snow on the ice so once you over the berm on the ice road you can go any where and it looked like 18 inches of ice. I think I might go back this weekend and try more spots

man alive....I'm glad I bought my otter flip style for this purpose alone!  Those popups are nice and have their place but for a solo fishn guy like myself anymore.....no thanks.  Comes with a sled for all your gear and one helluva comfortable chair too LOL

In windy conditions install one ice screw on the windward side before setting up the shelter.
It will hold the shelter in place while you screw in the other three screws.

Can you get a tie down kit for flip style shelters?

youw ont need a tie down kit for the flip style....you're IN them...we've had no issues.   I typically am IN the house when I flip it.

Plus the sled doubles as a gear hauler and she's big enough length wise for a jiffy with the 18" ext on her, plus all my gear.  The covers ARE tight though..the one small downfall but they do work.

Man you all must read the instructions witch say to tie down a corner of the shanty then set it up but since I am a man I set up the shanty then read the instruction then put the instructions away and never look at them a gin   ;D till the wife says I think it's wrong then I pull the instuctions back out to point out that I am right even if I am wrong  ;D

there is a lot of room once the back seat is out the only problem is that you have to put it back in after a long day of fishing. gee lets see I don't read directions and I'm lazy. man I hope my wife never reads this i think she would agree, then ask me to start on that list she made last year that I have been to lazy to read so I can do it all before the end of the year :o
