Need an auger
« on: Dec 11, 2009, 07:19 PM »
I am looking for a used power auger. My Jiffy 10 in was a bit heavy and large. Something 8 in and 2 hp would do. i saw an Eskimo 8 in at Sportsman Warehouse in Bozeman for $299. Have not heard much about his brand. After selling my Jiffy last year, I have been using a spud bar. A bit of work and its not pretty but, it works. Any ideas or contacts.  I am on a tight budget

you should have never sold your jiffy!!! i looked for a couple of years trying to find a used jiffy in a pawn shop around bozeman, and had to resort to an e-bay deal. nothing runs like  a tecumseh small engine, and i guess my family has always used jiffy augers.  before i got my jiffy, i used one of those cheap eskimo hand augers, and it really didn't work to bad. After a little use the blades get dull, but the sell replacement blades for like $15, and the auger is like $35. For early season, i usually use the hand auger, because the ice isn't as hard or thick, and it is not as tiring. The older jiffys run better in my opinion (but not quieter, lol), and they are pretty simple to tinker with on the ice... I have heard that you can't adjust the carburator on the new ones. Anyways... i am a jiffy guy lol, kind of like how some guys are ford or chevy guys.

I bought my Eskimo 8inch auger in the mid-ninties, and have never had a any problems with it.  It does have the Tecumseh engine (3HP).  The blade is 8 inch.  It is somewhat heavy, but it fits on my sled with no problems, so the weight isn't too big a consideration.  Other than draining it every season and cleaning the plug once a season, you should'nt have any second thoughts on purchasing an Eskimo.  If you think that the 3HP would be too heavy, they also make the model 8900 which uses the 2 hp enine, and you can always opt for the 6 inch blades.

In the market for a new auger as well thanks for the info guys... on the Eskimo's I notice quite a bit of plastic? Has this been an issue for anyone? I am fairly careful with my equipment but dont want to have to "baby" it either. Seems the Jiffy's are built tougher but I have heard of problems keeping them running up to par, (wonder if thats an altitude thing?) Im not affraid to spend the $$ but Im not one to spend hundreds and then have to "tinker" with it. Anyone have the new 4stroke Strikemaster? Saw one in use last year on Devils Lake ND and it sounded like an electric toothbrush... haha cut very nice tho!
Jig... Jig... Thump!!

My eskimo is the model M9000.  It dosn't have any plastic other than the gas tank, which is made up of a very durable plastic.  I have had no issues what so ever.  Seeing how my auger is getting pretty old, I have no idea of what they are made up of these days.
