Can ice grow w/ Daytime Temps in high 30's to 40's?
« on: Dec 13, 2009, 09:38 AM »
High Guys,
Just wondering what the thoughts are for Ice growing and forming on capped lakes when the daytime temps aare getting into the upeer 30's and 40's?  The nights here are getting down into the mid 20's...

i always focus my attention on the "low" in the forecast. as long as the low goes below freezing, you'll at least maintain what you have. ice destroying/melting conditions would be rain, warm temps (anything over 35 or so) with wind, and lows above freezing. (you could have all three....that would be a worst-case weather situation for ice fishing depending on how much ice you have to start with....like, if you have 15" of ice then its nothing to worry about, for one day anyhow, but if you have 1" then it will be a huge setback)

id say of you have a calm day in the low 40's and it drops to the mid 20's at night, it wont make ice, but it also wont hurt what you have. it might actually make a little at night since the nights are so long now.

A huge variable in the making and losing of ice is the amount of snow cover.

You have to remember that at this time of the year you are talking about 14 hours of darkness in most places and if the nighttime temps are below freezing you will be making more ice at night than you are losing during the day for an overall net gain in thickness.

at this point it also depends on the water temps.....since its early the water is still fairly warm so freezing is slower than mid winter when the water hovers at just above freezing.......add snow insulation and fluctuating temps....makes for uneven ice making........if in doubt, stay away.
