Late March Ice Fishing
« on: Dec 04, 2009, 09:13 AM »
Myself and a group of buddies from Northern Indiana are going to plan a 4 day get away in the 3rd. Week of March this year to do some walleye and perch fishing. Any recommendations on lakes or flowages to try. We are from the eastern part of Northern Indiana so we really don't want to drive much farther North than the middle of state for such a short trip. Any advise would be great. We are also looking to rent a cabin. Our ice will be toast by then, but figuring there should be plenty of ice left up in your neck of the woods. We are talking about Little Bay De Noc in the U.P. of Michigan too, but walleye season will be closed there as of March 15, not sure as far as Wisconsin waters go?
There is only one theory about angling in which I have perfect confidence, and this is that the two words, least appropriate to any statement, about it, are the words "always" and "never."

March 7th is when our season closes for most game fish  :( But panfish are open year round.

Generally is there ice in Green Bay through the end of March? I have read a couple of places that the perch fishing is coming back there?

The bay is always iffy no matter what time of year, can be fished well into march. Seems the perch are on the come back. My recent perch vids are all filmed on Green Bay.

My wife and I were on Houghton in MI the first day of Spring this year.  It was the last weekend for the lake tho.  We fished Sat. and Sun. and the ice was chucking when drilling by Sun. afternoon.

Perch fishing closes march 15th on the bay of green bay, eye's and pike can be had though. If you are into whitefish, they have been hard to keep of your hook while jigging the last couple years.
Also ice could be questionable.

Maybe look into the Mississippi river.  Boarder waters of MN are open year round.  Not sure of ice conditions.  That time of year is pushing it, but last year would have been ok.
