How many jigs do you put on one pole?
« on: Dec 17, 2008, 05:16 PM »
How many jigs do you put on one pole at a time?  How do you rig them?

Thanks,

Sometimes as many as 3, that's the limit here in CT. I tip them with spikes...

3 is the limit here in WI as well. I rarely if ever use more than one though. I will put out multiple poles or tip-ups though.

I personally like to use only one.  I have tried 2 and lost more fish than I wanted to.  I have heard that the people fishing for smelt use as many as the state allows.

And when it comes to my last cast,

When in the Lord's great landing net

That in His mercy I be Judged
              BIG ENOUGH TO KEEP.

Jigging for perch in >20 FOW I use 2.  Vertical rigged and staggered.  That is, one tied to 1 foot of mono so it sticks off to the side and one on the end of the line

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.

ONE,did use two years ago,but the bottom jig did all the work, top jig did not get many fish and caused trouble, hang on bottom of hole causing lost fish and tangles, that where not needed.

I normally use one jig.  Fished with a buddies uncle for perch one day and he had 4 tear drops tied onto one line, each with two waxies each. I'm not sure how legal that was though ??? :nono:

Pretty much the same reason I use only one 99% of the time. Way back before I used a flasher it was sometimes nice to cover a little more area but that was about the only advantage I saw.

A guy walked up to our shanties last year on Gogebic.....two or three guys in my group talked to him a while.
I was being anti-social which is rare for me.  After he left they told me what he was perch fishing with.

A casting Rapala body.....with all of the hooks cut off.  He threaded three dropper lines through the body vertically, one near the head, another in the middle another near the end. Not sure what the dropper lines were, mono or ? He affixed some type of eyelet onto the top middle that enabled him to jig it vertically.

On each line he had a small ice jig with a wiggler for bait.  Said it was the only thing he used....swore by them.
seems kinda kooky to me....but usually guys don't use what doesn't work.  Or he was shamming us which is possible..I've come to the conclusion that most people who enjoy ice fishing also enjoy a good joke.

Which reminds me....I'm going up with a crew this January...I'm going to rig up two of the most ridiculous, outlandish and craziest lures I can think of... Like a pike spoon with a rubber worm on a spinner jig type of silly concoction.  Soon as I catch a fish...this one guy I go with will ask me "what did you catch that with!!!  Do you have another one ...CAN I HAVE ONE PLEEEEESE...." So I'll say I caught it with this wappy-dappy-thing-of-a-mother....see if HE bites!!!!  I'll let him have it.

The only problem is; he might be blessed with the luck of a fool, and end up catching a trophy on the crazy lure. Then who will be laughing?

I thought of that :D...with my luck he WOULD catch some gigantic fish on it, or numerous fish knowing him.

I use one. Like ealier post I've never had much luck on the upper jig. The law here is two. I will use 2 in summer for cat though.

LOL's every year I come up with a weird idea concoction sort of mod to a lure and test it out until the fish will laugh at me silly.  Now I've toned things down and actually come up with some successful garaged ice fishing lures.
