where's the perch?
« on: Nov 20, 2009, 05:12 PM »
Last year I went looking for perch. I know that perch inhabit the lake. Its a small private lake.Deepest part is 40 feet deep, trying different depths I still couldn't find them. The lake jumps down 10 foot increments to 40. Any ideas on where they might be or where to start.

It would help if ya could post a map or tell us what lake.

I would look for 10-15' humps or islands out near the middle or deeper areas and see if there is any vegetation, but be careful you might accidentally snag a Wallie.

Try the local bait shop. You'll hear some tall stories but i've found some to be half true. Also try a sportsman guide. Some times it gives some good spieces info.

Sportsmans Guide Map shows one hump that come up to 10', but it is not near deep water.  One side of one hump on the NW edge near the boat ramp does drop into 20-30 FOW to the east.  Other than that, it appears to be a bowl.

Hope that helps.  I've never been on or seen the lake.

If you are talking about pretty lake, we have fished it several times, although not lately.  We were told to fish the hump as the schools of "jumbos" roam through there.  The only jumbos we caught were not jumbos.  I remember catching plenty of dinks, but nothing worth keeping.  We drilled all over that lake and could never find anything with size.

One thing with perch that holds true on any lake.  You have to move and drill until you find them.  If you are catching dinks, move.  Don't spend more than about 5 minutes in a spot without a bite or only catching dinks.  They school by size, so keep moving until you find them.  In the winter, I would look for them on deep flats.  I rarely catch them on any kind of sloping breakline.  They will either be on top where it is flat (weeds help) or at the base of the drop where it is a deeper flat.  There does not have to be any weeds on the deep flats to hold them.  Perch move all the time, so even when you do find them, you usually have to drill the area out to stay on the roaming school.

Always wanted to try over there for perch, but couldn't bring myself to bring in the 8 trolling lines to drop down for perch.. sounds like i should.
