Let's Talk About Ice..........and Augers!!!!
« on: Oct 24, 2009, 11:58 AM »
I was jigging walleye on Hopatcong Thursday and can't want to try it through the ice.  I usually stick to the River Styx, but F-THAT this year.  I'm going deepwater fishin'.

Was thinkin' of asking the old lady for a gas auger for Christmas.  Can anyone suggest a dependable first gas auger that won't break the bank?

Hope to see some of y'all on the big pond this winter..........if we get ice~!!!!

i have a jiffy with a 3 horsepower. it was around 400.  i think those 2 hp strikemaster mags are around 300. do some shopping on the internet, or in a few more weeks run up to gander mountain, or out to cabela's. those two stores have a nice selection of ice fishing stuff if you get there when they first set up and have plenty in stock.

Gander in Scranton already has there stuff out  ;) ;)

Unless you are looking for a 10" auger which you really won't need if you're looking to target eyes, I'd say look at a 2HP model. You won't need the extra power for a 8" auger plus they are quite a bit lighter which is nice when you are drilling a lot of holes trying to find the eyes. I personally prefer Jiffy but I know lots of guys that prefer Strikemaster. Its more of a matter of shopping around and deciding what you're looking to spend

I own a 10 inch Eskimo Shark and it is overkill most of the time.  Stick with 8" and you'll be fine.  As for getting eyes at LH through the ice....good luck with that.  They're pretty hard to find through the ice,  it's hit or miss....mostly miss.

i have seen a few eskimo's out on the ice in past years. the thing i dont like about them is they have shaver blades, which means u have to clean out the holes after you drill them.  unless i'm wrong.. i've never saw one yet?

Last year up in Maine I brought my 8" Mora hand auger and was poking holes every bit as fast as the two guys who had gas augers.  That was through 14 inches of ice.

I would put that money towards a Vex instead...  at least that is what I am looking for this Christmas  ;D

as long as you have sharp sweedish blades they work effortlessly!
