With all the great outerwear now available, cold is usually not a problem.  Add a portable shelter and a "buddy" propane heater to the game and I feel invincible!  A far cry from 20 years ago when I first started ice fishing.  As warm as my military issue cold weather gear was back then, the new light weight commercial gear now made outbeats it by far.  My only problem, my hands seem to be the biggest issue when the gloves have to come off to bait hooks, ties lures or whatever.  A decent pair of gloves is one thing I need to look for.

On the really brutal days that I know will affect the propane. I keep the tank in my coat with me for the walk out. It's kind of a pain to find a perfect spot for it but far from the pain of not having the heater going in the portable.
The angle of the dangle is directly proportionate to the heat of the beat.

ill fish at 0f w/ no wind w/ no shelter but once the windsheild factor drops below -20f i go to my permanent shack that i can drive too. 20f w/ as much as a 10mph. wind w/ no shelter can make for a long day. thank God for portables and good cold weather clothes. without them i wouldnt be able to tough it like i used too. must be getting old.

Made it out in -35 with windchill weather last year and I was glad I did.  The fish were absolutely on fire all day and I could have had my limit of bluegill 10x over.  They were hitting it before I could even get the line out.
The only bad part came when I had to chip my shanty, heater, tip-ups, snowmobile treads, auger and pulling sled out of the ice before I could go home.

last year i was out in -30f with a wind chill of about -50 in just my teepee. All I used for heat was a single burner colemon stove and a dual mantle lantern. It was so cold out side that the condinsation was turning right to frost on the shack. and i was just fine in there. thats probible the coldest I have ever fished in, and I could go colder. warmest time I was out by the islands it was about 65-68f we were in our t-shirts and bibs and killing the lakers. but it was a bit scary coming off cause a pressure crack opened up about 2 ft. Needless to say that was the last day out.
thats the biggest smelt i've ever seen

It's more the wind that gets me. it could be -30F and not be too bad if it's calm. Throw in a wind and it's a whole other game. As far as warm, when you can start kicking your foot through the 8 inches of punk, it's probably time to find better ice or hang it up for the year. If it's hard black ice, it can be 80, I'll be there!
