Are your first ice plans set?
« on: Nov 15, 2009, 08:36 PM »
I am going to be looking for some sunfish on a little lake that stays out of the wind. I will probably take my old fish house, a DX-3000 shappell to save weight. It is 100lbs lighter than my Voyager, so when the ATV stays home I still use my shap. I was looking at a Fish Trap Kenai today, it has an awesome price! It was only $169! I may have to pick one of them up. The seat is a joke, but I think I can easily strip the padding  off and mount the spare seat out of my Voyager on it.

I love first ice. I can leave the auger home and use spud, and fish location is always easy to predict. That first trip to the lake is always the best, it is like Christmas morning for a kid.

Do you guys have any plans yet?

I have my winter planned out through January.  This week I leave for WI deer hunting.  Then it is off to the Ice Show.  ML season here in MN to the middle of December.  Then on the ice (I hope) till January.  First part of January is a trip to NW WI, then down to Cabo San Lucas for 10 days.  Wow!  the winter books up fast!

I usually don't have time to ice fish until January which is probably good for my health since there is usually enough ice to keep me dry by then. But most of my ice fishing will probably be at the cabin in WI (plus I'm gonna try to sweet talk skipper into showing me some of his crappies...i'll bring the beer!)

If I'm not fishing or hunting right now, you can bet that I\'m thinking about it!

I was planning on fishing Thanksgiving weekend like last year, but the jet stream doesn't seem to be cooperating.  It's a long, windless lake with a big basin as the main structure.  They just cruise around the basin and smack your lure.  Crappies as big as your boot!
How would you play today if you knew you couldn\'t play tomorrow?

Just east of Webster/Danbury...about 2-2.5 hours from the cities. mmmm boot size crappies...I had a dream about them last night!

If I'm not fishing or hunting right now, you can bet that I\'m thinking about it!

I'll be going right past there on Thursday.  I take 48 over to 77 and then East to 53.  Then north just over an hour to our deer camp.

yup...I love the city of Siren, WI it's such a nice small town! I know I was pheasant hunting down by Owatonna on Sunday and there was a very thin layer of ice on some of the ponds! That means it's close to ice time...and that's in the southern part of the state...we need that cold weather STAT!

I was out Sunday too.  Only 1 hen flushed.  Really bad year for birds.  I hope the fish make up for it.

yeah well we need the crops to get pulled...I saw about 15 hens and 2 roosters (only had a shot at one) but there are still too many cornfields in. whenever the dog starts to get birdy I get between the dog and the corn! That was hunting both Saturday and Sunday.

You will need to sweet talk two fish Tommy too, I need permission from his in-laws to access my best crappie lake. The lakeshore is 100% privately owned and there are no places to sneak in on a public road easement. I have a couple other lakes too, but not nearly as many fish in them. You would be surprised how many large crappies can be caught in many lakes, you just gotta know where to drill. ;)

HINT: They are never under the shanty village, ever! ;D

I saw skim ice on most of the smaller metro lakes today.

I will be fishing a few hundred feet outside my back door if we ever get any ice. I bought the Kenai Sunday at FF. Haven't finished putting it together yet. I agree with you on the seat. I only have the two seats with my Voyager otherwise I would try and use one of those. Hard to do if you don't have a spare. I'm sure there is a boat seat or something out there that will work.
