MARQUETTE -- It may have been snowy and windblown off Presque Isle in Marquette on Wednesday, but that didn't stop at least one surfer from trying his luck with the waves there.
He got a lot more than he bargained for. He was pounded repeatedly into the breakwater, according to authorities, until he finally managed to climb over the breakwater with his board to calmer seas. But then he was exhausted.
At that point, a Coast Guard crewman swam out to him, attached him to a rope, and then other rescuers pulled him to shore.
He was tired, cold, and covered with ice. Authorities say he was suffering from hypothermia.
The surfer, whose name has not been released, was taken to Marquette General Hospital. No word yet on his condition.
