Benson Walleye, is it over?
« on: Feb 11, 2009, 06:20 PM »
OK, I'm going out on a limb here.

I predict that the walleye bite for southern champlain will be done by this weekend and not turn back on this season.

If you can prove me wrong I'd love to see some pictures.

I just want to test a theory.

I strongly agree, ONLY because of all this runoff. Its gonna trigger the fish to start heading for spawning grounds, & up the river.

My theory would have you still getting them up north, but the south end done.  The main reason being the same, runoff.

Well from all my past experiences Its AMAZING leading up to a week after the first runoff, then things definitely go downhill.

I will have to agree with you both. It's too bad. I wanted to head to Benson next weekend. Maybe I'll to Tabor Point instead. I think that the runoff will effect things the least up there. We'll see what the weather continues to do.

Wouldn't the run off effect them on N. Champ too.

Heck, seems they are staged in front of the Lamoille all winter anyway..

My theory is that the runoff from the clay soils in the southern end of Champlain screws things up for at least 3-4 weeks.  Given the date, I bet we get another melt/rain event in the next three weeks, pushing the clearing past the end of the season.  The walleye won't go up the Poultney until the temperature is right, dosen't matter what the flow is.

Heavy flow of sediment seems to always effect the fishing. Very true...

when my father used to ice fish the walleyes in the channel, when the water would get really murky from run-off, they would either fish extremely shallow (2-4 FOW) or they would try to find clearer water in front of bay and pond mouths.

Sounds like a good experiment to me.  Now I have to go out and look for a nice clear trib flowing in.

That's why I posted it here.  With more people testing the theory, we can all learn a little more.  Throw down some smelly dead bait and you may pull up the winning pike, but set some up for walleye and see if I'm right or wrong.

Mom's 60th B-Day party that Saturday, plus I have to work, so I doubt I'll fish.
