Anyone Built a floor for a floorless?
« on: Jan 22, 2009, 02:59 PM »
Hi,

New to the community here. buying a shanty soon. and was looking for some advice.

Ive been looking at the clam5600. but sadly i'm a poor as S**T college student and its a little price.

So i'm looking at more the floorless models.

So my question is. has anyone here ever constructed a "floor" to sit under a floorless model portable shanty?

i was thinking if the shanty is a 3-4 man size to do a plywood sheet with a hinge in the middle for folding it up. 4 cut "portals" also with hinges. and then marina carpet over.  All supplies that i have already.

Anyone ever tried this?
or if you have a foorless model if you had any other methods too keep your feet off the ice?

Any help would be great.
Thanks

Yes.  Built one, but haven't bothered using it yet.  I just wear warm boots.
Glue 1/2" or 1" Polystyrene foam onto the plywood for added insulation.
The "lightweight" floor added too much weight.  The Cube weighs only 23lbs,
and is huge!  The Cube and my "floor" weighed less than my DX4000, but was
still heavy and awkward.  The Cube by itself works well.  I will try the floor
later in the year maybe.  Oh, yea, I glued Marine vinyl flooring onto the plywood.
The floor is 1' shy of covering the complete Cube floor so I didn't bother with
any holes...just have a 1' strip along one side that is bare ice.

I have a cube and love it
bought a pice of astro terf out door carpet
cut 1' short. I put all holes (4) on the back wall
Most of the time I dont use any floor.
Blue tarp works fine also. I wear good boots.
The only reason for the floor is when its warm
with the heater it gets slick and wet.

I really doubt you would want to carry around a plywood floor, unless you can throw it in a pick up. Plywood weighs about 25 pounds per 1/4" and even though you won't have rot issues in the winter, the glue use in non pressure treated wood can start to dissolve. I have problems around the edges in my shack. The wood starts to bubble up. Pressure treated plywood topped with some expanded polystyrene insulation would be the best bet.
Consider using a space blanket instead. It will help reflect radiated heat. Buy some hole covers and rest your feet on those. Lightest weight solution ;)

Check with a commercial roofer in your area they tear off alot of roofs and the rubber they use works great. That is what i have used for a floor and it also works great for the hard shack roof.

Good idea!  Rolls up for transport.  Kind of hard to "roll" up the plywood.  Doh!

I've got an old cabelas 3 man that came with the tent and you built the floor.  It's nice to fish in but is pretty heavy with a plywood floor.
If it ain't broken, you ain't try'in!

I use a tarp. Real light. Slippery on bare ice. Not slippery on snow over ice.

Went to Dollar General and bought 2 of the rubber welcome mats.  $3.00 each.  They work excellent, rubber so they don't soak up ice/water like carpet.  Easy to use and when you're done fishing you just shake off any snow/ice off them and throw them in the tub and you're good to go...  They do help to keep your feet warmer............

WALLY-eye I hear you on that one. My thought is will gas eat into it that is why I went with the bed liner route I already know that the auger gas wont melt it .

I dident even think of that. i have a piece of an old auto factory convaver belt that is like 6 feet wide and 9 feet long that i used in the back of an old pickup i had. really think and a flexable grip fabric on one side. think i might take that out first and see how well it does with some holes :)

hmmmn.   Usually would not want a floor, but thinking about going camping with my eskimo quick fish 3.  If I am going to drive to my spot, so weight isn't an issue, then I think a floor would be good idea for 12+ hours?  Plywood, with indoor/outdoor carpet????  I know after 8 hours of fishing with the heater running, I have plenty of water.  Of course this is dependent of the temperature outside.  I am thinking of two pieces so they fit in the SUV easy.

McMish, my dad just got a set of these. You should be able to pick them up at a larger hardware store. They are like huge puzzle pieces and are made of foam so they are super light.
