4 - 6 person shelter ideas?
« on: Feb 12, 2009, 09:01 PM »
Hey guys looking for some thoughts.....

Doing a trip in a few weeks with a bunch of buddies the only problem is I am the only one with a tent and it really only fits 2 with all the gear.

Wondering if anyone has made a shanty or found an cheap tent that would fit a big group of guys....or possible a group of big guys...lol

Looking to make something if i can, want it to be portable, easy to set up, big and as cheap as possible....is it a pipe dream or can anyone help??

im just finishing one made from an older 16ft holiday trailer, gutted most of interior, kept the stove and a few cabinets, and the furnace, would fit 6 comfortably, im only rigging it for 4, picked the unit up for 500 bucks, ive even thought of doing it out of an old truck camper...

find an old tent trailor and drill holes in the floor and use a bucket to seal the floor to the ice. im sure u could find one for 200 bucks needing new tires, plus u have a spot to take a nap

it might not hold up in the rain but we arnt fishing in the rain are we? lol

How "portable" do you want it?  Is the question i found myself asking this year.

For total portability...I have used 5 or 10 man ARMY style tents to ice fish out of.  With a sled, a lantern and a coleman stove and some fuel...it's all you need for shelter.

That is PORTABLE ...to me.

Works really well, if you can find one of these...and one guy could carry a 10 man on his shoulder....if he had to (for short times...).  If you have a sled, it rolls up nice and narrow/short relative to it's size.

I have never looked at buying something like this, so I have no clue what it would cost.

I am going the route of a truck camper next year....then it's just lift it on..and off the ice....move with the truck.

use my SLED/HUT, when walking on..or with the quad.

Good luck!!

What me and some friends would do back home is set up a big wind-break out of some logs from shore and a big tarp or two. One guy had a portable wood stove on an old GT Snoracer frame. I know a lot of guys who make burn barrels from old steel washing machine drums and mount them on push lawn mover chassis. Drill holes part way into the ice in a horseshoe shape, drop logs into them, wrap the tarp around them. With the stove in the closed end, and it worked well for a big group of people.
A bad day of fishing beats anything else I'd be doing today.....

Has anyone ever thought of one of those tarp type... garages for vehicles or ATVs, that you can get at canadian tire and the like?

I mean , with a a good group of guys and a small heat source..it would stay warm in there, I would think.

Good luck!!

I bought a 9x9 pinnicale ice tent at Walmart will sit 4 easily and at 150 bucks it's a goo deal , sets up in about 4-5 min with 1 guy.
only b***h is the pegs, grab a cordless and a spade drill drill quik holes and use lag bolts. Been in  -30 with a wind, had a mr heater in it and was fishing in shirt sleeves.
SO sad...Please put this on your E mail if you know, are related to, divorced from, or married someone who suffers from Stupidity. People need to understand that stupidity is real and should be taken seriously. You could be sitting next to a stupid person right now. There is still no known cure for stupidity and sympathy does not help. Sometimes a 2x4 to the back of the head helps, but not a lot. But we can raise awarenes
