tipups in the shanty?
« on: Mar 05, 2009, 10:20 AM »
Hey all - I'm going to be fishing my 2 man shanty by myself this weekend. There is plenty of room for 4 or probably even 5 holes. Is there any reason I shouldn't run a tipup or two in the shanty as opposed to having to go run out after them? I realize I won't be covering as wide of a swath of water, but was thinking it might be convenient.

ive done this many times when im fishing by myself.      ive hood alot more fish this way than if it was spread out over a biggeer area.      i think maybe the jigging attracted the fish, and then they took the tip up bait as it must have presented an easier meal for them.
dont take life too seriously, you'll never get out of it alive                                            team broke azz

Why not just run dead stick lines?

When I am in my portable alone I run one jigging stick and one slip bobber rig.

I believe it's only legal to run 2 rods...but you're allowed more tipups..4 is better than 2 in my book.

Should that be the case (with the law) I agree. In WI, we are alloed a total of 3 baits. If you are fishing three lines (in any combo.) with one bait each, that is the most you can have. If you are running a spreader rig for crappies or perch with two individual baits.......that's 2 of your 3. It is a little complex. However, I do like setting a dead stick/tip-up (some type of relatively still bait) next to one I am jigging.
Stay on top!

I bought a Rattle reel that I clamp to the aluminum poles that support the shack.

Use a line marker to reset your depth after a fish hits, and  your in business.

I like them because the extra line is within arms reach, and I have caught some nice fish with this method.

Hope this helps,

Wiener

Why not run a rod and reel with a bobber and eliminate the line mess in the shack???

I always fish a trap in my portable.
If your using bait that wont turn the reel, dont use the flag, and just watch your reel.
this way when a fish hits it wont feel the resistsance when the flag goes off.

I usually start off with one in the shack. Find it helps with setting the depth of your bait. I always put one down right when I get there, and adjust it to the depth I like, then set my others using that as a guide (assuming im running them in the same depth). I have had lots luck fishing them inside the shack, and its nice because you dont have to advertise the fish you are pulling in with a bright orange flag for all the lake to see
