Menards Ice shelters
« on: Dec 14, 2008, 02:58 PM »
I see in the Menards ad there is a simple one man ice shelter called a Strike Zone 1 for $140. Anyone have one of these or looked at them? I know it's probably not a trap or frabil but is it good enough for a beater, light enough to drag around all day one person one hole shack? Does the fabric keep the wind out?
We are in the midst of a blizzard so it's better to check in here then not being able to go look at one myself right now.  :-\

Thanks,
Tim

Dont do it... Save up another 60 bucks and get a clam 2000. They go for about 200 and will last a good 5-10 years. The menards shelter will last one or two years at most before it falls apart at the seems. Then your really throwing 140 bucks in the hole

i've had my strike zone 1 since they first came out with them quit awhile ago, just got a new one for my brother and he swears by it as well. for the money it actually is a good shack. no it doesn't beat a clam. but it doesn't beat the pocket book

Update on my post.
Went and got a Strikezone-I partly because I didn't find any bad reports on the internet. Well there should be some... at least from me. After I got it I have run across a couple recent ones(last two weeks) describing the same problem I had.

The one set up looked fine and when I got mine put together it looked OK. The front bar didn't go all the way down but I figured it was something I could get to work. No it didn't work. In the cold it didn't get anywhere close to the ice, like 5 or 6 inches from it. The one in the store sits flat on the floor but mine seemed like it was short on fabric or some of the velcro fasteners were in the wrong place.
Menards took it back after being used once with hardly a question so I'm guessing they are seeing a few come back.
The one thing is the the size of the sled and how it pulled was great for my use. Even the material wasn't terrible, I'm just not going to mess with another one to see if it will all go together right.

Now looking for a deal on a Fish Trap Scout or Pro, heck even a Frabill Recon. No doubt they are all better in the QC department.

I haven't fished out of one, but I read some comments from people that do own them. One guy said that the fabric cracked and tore on a day when it was about 10 below zero. Several people said that they couldn't get it to work right after they put it together and would have had to find a way to modify it. one of my friends has two of them that are a couple years old and still in the box. He offered one to me for $89 and I turned him down. After sitting on the ground in a barn for over two years, how good do you think they would be.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Scouts a great little shack. Only complaint I have about mine is putting it together. I am not one for sitting on the floor for 2-3 hours anymore, so that was a bear.

The scout is definetly the way to go!!  Love mine, does it's job and more!  Assembly wasn't horrible, and I was working in the cold garage.
