walleye tip up rigging
« on: Jan 06, 2003, 07:34 PM »
i've never given walleyes a try ice fishing, and i think i just might give it a shot this winter. i was wondering how most of you rig your tip ups for walleyes. what kind of minnows (sucker/shiner), line size, hook size, how many feet to fish off the bottom, .... and so on. any information from any of you would be great. thanks........
Play 'em if you wanna fillet 'em!

I tie a swivel on my ice line then 5-10 feet of 6lb mono. I use treble hooks depending on the bait size, and I hook my bait behind the top fin thru the back. I use either medium shinners or small to medium suckers. Find a good drop off with a weed line, set up right out side of the weed line on top of the drop off and stagger up and down the drop off. Set your bait right off bottom about 6-12 inches. Also, ask local bait shops they should be able to help too when buying bait. Hope this help out.

In MN we can't use treble hooks on tip-ups so here is what I do.

I have the spool filled with 30lb dacron, then you can either tie on a swivel or I use the uni-knot to attach a 5' 30lb leader of fireline.  I don't use mono because walleyes can cut it with their teeth.  I then tie on two hooks one below the other about 2" apart.  Depending upon where we are fishing will determine the type of minnow.  The main lake I fish walleyes only seem to bite on large fatheads.  I take the top hook closest to the spool and hook that in front of the dorsal fin with the point of the hook facing towards the head.  The trailer hook or bottom hook goes into the tail also facing towards the head.  Some people tell me it is over kill but I have never lost a fish with this rig.  By hooking your minnows this way it also slows them down so you don't get accidental trips on the tip-up.

I usually have the bait about 12-18" off the bottom.  The hook size is like a 6 or 8 I believe.  (Been so long since I had to buy them I can't remember what I have anymore)  If you look at a Lindy Rig for walleyes that is the size I use.

Hope this helps and good luck!!!! :'(

I use about the same sized treble as the rest.  I attach it to 1 1/2 to 2 feet of mono.  I put a red bead or two above the treble hook.  The "bleeding" hooks work well also.  For bait I do one of two things.  I either use a medium shiner or two fatheads facing each other to make it look like they are fighting.  I place the hook 6 inches off bottom.  These are all things I do with tipups.  I have not jigged for walleyes but did catch a small one jigging with a small teardrop with a wax worm.

All good advice. I use a 1/4 to 3/8oz. slip sinker above a swivel on the main line to 2 foot 8lb. flourocarbon leader and a #10 treble hooked though the back of a medium shiner.

what usually works for me is find a shiner the size of your middle finger or a real big fathead minnow. you then tie a 5 foot piece of 8lb mono line and tie it to your tip-up line with a swivel. on your mono put a #6 hook don't tie it on it needs to become a slip hook, at the end of your line tie a treble hook on not sure what size right know but it should be the size of your thumb. after your rigged up take the treble hook and hook one barb through the roof of the shiners mouth then take your slip hook and hook it under the dorsel fin of the shinerand thats it. I usually fish 6-12 inches off bottom. with this set up you will never lose a big one or your shiner because when the walleye tries to spit the shiner out the treble has git him hooked and your shiner when spit out slides up and down your line therefore saving $$$$ on bait.

You could use chubs but I use big shiners for they do really good also big nightcrawlers.

When I fish for the old Eyes the prime time is right before sunrise and just after sunset......Equipment goes as follows.......Green spot Dacron 25lb. test for the spool.....Swivel then a 6 ft flourocarbon leader and a size 12 treble with a nice icicle or a blue nose chub for bait..........dont forget your small split shot about 7in above the hook........I think its better to go light tackle and acutally catch the fish...instead of letting the line do the work.....

Any of the line/hook combos are great, but what I look for as far as drop offs. weedlines is to set the depth deep enough (foot off the bottom) but far enough away from the weed line as to make the shiner swim to it, but not quite make it.  This has it essensially dangling just outside the weed line, rather than finding a hiding spot in the weeds.  The aquaview is great for this and has improved my catch rate.  BUT, if you don't have that, then try to find the edge of the weedline and set up a few feet into the drop off past the edge of the weeds.
