Mr. Twister Filet Knife
« on: Jan 13, 2009, 02:58 PM »
I am sure somebody has covered this, but I could not find what I wanted by searching.  right now I am trying to keep some sunfish and some crappies from a local pond.  I am throwing back all the bigger crappies and pumpkin seeds, the last two trips I have kept a total of 9 fish the gills and seeds have to be over 7 for me to keep and the crappies have to be between 9-10 inches.  as of right now I am just scaling them and chopping off their heads.  it goes pretty quick with the small amount of fish I do catch.  I have a 25 dollar gift certificate for cabelas that is just burning a hole in my pocket.  my question is, would it be worth getting the electric filet knife for my panfish.  (if it is quicker, I actually might start keeping bluegills that are a little over 6 inches, so i can keep more)  I also do catch other fish like walleyes and pike, so the knife would get plenty of use.  what are you opinions?  do i just continue scaling the fish, or will the electric knife be worth it?

well, if your not filleting your catch, the electric knife is usless to you. If you already own a normal fillet knife, try using it to fillet your catch once, before you move on to the electric versions.
If your unsure of how to fillet fish, there are several listed on youtube, along with several step-by-step info on numerous fishing and even cooking sites.
You can scale or skin your catch if you fillet the fish. You'll find that skinning them while filleting is twice if not three times faster than scaling them. However, there is something about a bluegill with the skin on it...

I have the Rapala elecrtic fillet knife and love it.  You will butcher a few fish before you get the hang of it, but after you do you won't regret it.  Just my $.02.

Might be worth it more on the walleyes, pike, and crappies more so than the gills.

Well this is just my thoughts on it, I have filleted a lot of blue gills if I have only 10 or so to do then I use a regular fillet knife but if there's over 10-15 yes I break out the electric and yes they are worth every cent you will spend. I had a guy at work I won't mention cator's name at all, turned me on to electric knife filleting and I have not looked back since.

I think there are 2 different blades for different size fish. I would like to find the smaller blades. I have the mr.twister knife and I have the larger blades only. I agree 10 -15 fish I would just use regular knife. any more than that definitely the electric.

Give your son a fish, and he will eat for a day.....teach your son to fish and eventually he'll end up kicking your @ss every time you fish together!!!

Maybe you like fooling with the bones, but I like the meat.  I have flayed thousands of perch and crappie over the years with my Mr. Twister.   Fast and easy.   I love it.
