depth
« on: Jan 17, 2009, 01:53 PM »
went out ice fishing yesterday and started drilling my holes the lake im in is only about 30 ft deep anyway found 27feet then moved in till i was in about 14 feet with weeds and a few perch, set one tip up then moved a hundred yards found 12 feet weeds set another tip up,anyway my buddy drilled about 50 yards away didnt have the vex to check his depth was in a hurry to catch some perch in shallower water,so just set his up in what ended up being 22 ft of water, he ended up geting the only flag of the day,was wondering if anyone had any suggestions why.it was a clear sunny day,and our second try at catching a pike through the ice.{first try was unsuccesful}we had about 5 inch smelt on.he also set his up on the bottom and i set mine up about halfway.fished from light till dark.just curious on some possibilities.

Some days pike will cruise flats adjacent to drop offs and weed lines.  I have found them cruising 20 - 30' flats mid day on my favorite pike lake.  Always a good idea to put atleast one out there.

From what you've described with depth/distances if this is correct? (he moved 50yrds from your 12ft location that's a 10ft drop, where you went only 2ft in 100yrds), so it sounds like he was fishing at the base of a steeper drop off than you were.  Sharper drop, with easy access to shallow weeds, meaning a better ambush spot for pike to be hanging out at.  Next time I'd set up a few tip-ups at different depths along it, and do some jigging as well all along the drop, from the bottom to just below the ice.

ya where he set up at it dropped very rapidly and the two i set up were on the flat before it dropped hard.i went about a hundred yards along the drop off or along the shore line instead of a hudred yard straight out.hope this makes sense.

Maybe the pike out in CT are strange (we are about the furthest south that they can survive), but I've caught all of my bigger fish (two 39's and a 38) in 2-5 feet of water.
Pike fishing is a like a cruel mistress that is too beautiful to leave.

Ive been fishing a little resivoir lately...with virtually no pressure in the winter (packed in the summer though) and its pretty small overall...the deepest ive seen is maby 20 feet...theres a  huge portion of it just 6 ft weed flats, then theres a rocky spot that drops off to 10-12 feet 25 feet from shore...and the one bay drops off pretty decent, only about 175,200 ft wide and there should be a little bit of weed on the bottom there(didnt seem get any weeds icefishing but there there in the summer) then the last spot is a narrow part of the lake maby 100 foot wide of the lake which drops right off along the shore pretty decent and runs about 12-20 feet deep, with limited weeds...Idk what the best bet for pike would be?I spent two days in a row trying to figure it out....we had 10 tip ups out the first day on the area with about 8-15 ft of water weedy area and thought itd be perfect but couldnt catch crap....then tried a little deeper today on a dropoff without any luck and then tried the rocky area...which basically means ive fished the entire lake...i didnt fish the really shallow stuff that heavily...the 5,6 ft weedy flat covers half the lake...idk what to keep trying?i havnt even had a flag, and heck im using mono leaders even...i tried large baits and mediums
