How close is too close
« on: Jan 19, 2009, 02:53 PM »
I had a question that deals with courtesy more than anything else. When I head down to the lake and see a bunch of shanties grouped together I'm assuming that fishermen have found fish in that area. If I approach that area what distance would be considered encroaching on them? I wouldn't do this on a smaller lake or pond but on a very big lake it makes sense to fish where the fish are. I've never had any problems before but just thought that I'd ask what everyone thinks.

I'd try not to fish in the same hole that they are in. Anything else is fair game!!!
Sorry, couldn't help myself. Cya....

depends on how much line is on your tip ups and thiers   I have 200 yards so add that to yours and your safe   but never be closer than 150' unless your with that group   or invited in    thats the safest distances to be  no line tangle

EXCELLENT QUESTION   ??? ??? ::) ::)  This is a very sticky subject on a few areas we fish ,most people are very courteous and stay about 100 yards away when we are perch fishing . ;D    And even farther when we are pike fishing.

But when we are fishing for eyes that is a whole different ball game. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

I think that the early bird gets his choice of where he wants to set up and if anyone gets closer than 50 yards with out asking the person that was there before them if they mind if i fish here then it can get nasty.

I am really interested what others think about this subject.?????

I would think if you show respect you will get respect . This is only my thought. Whats yours?

WELCOME TO THE SHANTY NEWICE  8) :)

in my case i usually don't like anybody within  at least 100 yards unless of course it is a really small body of water. i in return stay that far away as a rule.

No one owns the lake, but common courtesy should be used. I just don't like people so I would prefer you get as far away from me as possible.

I have only had an issue with this once. A guy was cutting holes within five to ten feet from my tip ups and fishing.  He had the hole lake to use. I watched this for a while then I asked him if he would like me to pull my tip ups up so he could fish in those holes.  He gave me a dirty look and then moved a way a little bit.  I think when people get to close it's rude. I personally don't go near other groups of people.  Just my two cents!

If your fishing on a big lake and you see a group of shanties in a small spot you shouldn't go to close to them.  If there are say 3 guys per shanty and there are 10 shanties that's 30 guys and 150 tipups.  If it is a small area then 150 tipups will usually cover that area.  If its a big lake like you say then there is no reason to fish on top of these guys.  All the fish in that lake aren't just in that one spot.  Try somewheres else.  If you really want that spot then go ask one of the parties if they mind you fishin by them.  A lot of guys will say sure the more the merrier when asked,  its when you don't ask is when people get heated.

I've offer a very different response to this question, which is; why would you want to fish near a shanty city.  Just because there are people there does not mean there are fish there.  What it does mean is that there are people there - that's all.  Another thing it could mean is that there are very few fish there (meaning it could be fished out).

I aviod those places like the plague.  Go to a good contour map and do your homework there and fish where you think the fish should be.  You'll find that you out fish the guys in the shanty city easily 2:1.

Just my thoughts...

David
