Fishing line
« on: Jan 15, 2009, 06:28 PM »
So for trout opener today i got a new rod setup and some heavier line. The new line i got was Berkley Trilene micro ice, 8LB. I also got this heavy of a line because I'm goin up to L.O.W. in a couple weeks and all i have is panfish setups. I had to throw my brand new rod and reel back in my case and use my panfish setup. Whenever i let tension off my line it would just start to unravel off my spool. It got me pretty frustrated. Is this normal for you guys that use the heavier stuff? Is there a line that wont do this to me or does anybody have any tips to stop this from happening? any tips would be very helpful, thanks

I personally use Berkley Vanish on all my Ice Set-ups.  But, what you are talking about is pretty common unless you let your line seat on your reel.  Most people make the mistake of spooling up their line and then using it the same day.  If you do this, it will jump off your reel.  I prefer at least two days to allow the line to seat itself on my reels.  The heavier the test line, the worse it will jump off.  I like to use 8lb Berkley Vanish for trout and 6lb for walleye.  Anything smaller than walleye I use 2lb.

If you like to be able to see your line, Vanish Transition works very well.

when you put your line on your reel hit it with a hair dryer quick or hotwater and it will help the uncoiling.

Yah, with time that fixes itself. The other thing I try to do is spool the line in the same direction as it was packaged. Every time I forget I end up with the problem you're having big time.

You guys like Vanish? Ohhhh, you can keep it all for yourselves.... ;D

I like the Berkley ice stuff in "steel" color for most of my stuff. It stays nice and limp in the cold.

The set up that we use for lakers is spider wire, then tie on about four feet of an 8 lb fluorocarbon directly to the spider,  with a blood knot, lakers are very toothy. Make sure to use a larger reel, you will be fishing deep and they like to run ...  have fun, dress warm.

I have tried them all and to tell you the truth I am now stuck with Fireline............I used 8 lb for a long time and last year I went down to the 6lb and haven't had any problems with that but for the ultimate in sensitivity this year I dropped the ball and went down to 4lb Fireline Crystal............I love the stuff I have pulled in 6-7 lb walleyes without a problem....(just dont horse them in let the drag do the work for you).........I dont think I will use any other line any more................

I still use the Berkley Trilene Cold Weather line. The blue color lets me see the line on the ice. Make sure you really set the hook when fishing with short rods, and super limp line.
