Perch Eggs 2010
« on: Jan 01, 2010, 04:24 PM »
I know it's been discussed before but Perch eggs are excellant when the sacs are fried.
Keep your eggs next time and try it, it's gotta be good for something. :)

You people are cruel, to tell people on here that perch eggs are good to eat.  I have eaten salmon eggs and smelt eggs and they were darn good.  Perch eggs are one of the only things i can not eat.  I mean i like to eat just about anything. Perch eggs are not food! Do not be fooled.

I do eat them a few times a year. I try to use unbroken sacs. I soak them in salt water overnight. Then roll in seasoned flour and put in a pan of hot grease. Fry until the sacs burst open and the eggs are WELL FRIED. Do not try to eat the eggs undercooked they are very fishy tasting. The taste is not for everyone but I and several family members have bee eating them for generations.

To each his own,,I love them and if you don't want them give them to someone who will eat them,
Here is a sack out of a 15" perch, what do you do with this, cut it in about 3 or 4 equil part and make patties, smaller sacks just bread and fry.
What I think are Bad or gross things to eat are Olives, beets , Lima beans,Dill Pickles, and yogert--great things are Perch Eggs....

i know this has nothing to do with icefishing but they make awsome trapping bait for those of you the trap. for leaning pole sets you put fish oil down the pole and break open the eggs smear them up the pole and put a clump of cleand fish remains just past a conibear you will get fishers , martens , racoon , gray fox , opossums and bobcat.

If you had the chance to put them in the lake that the fish came from, would they survive and hatch if a pike or some other fish did not eat them. I now a old ukrainain woman that used to sit in front of the tv and eat them like candy, dont no how she preped them.
Gonna get me a 16" Perch this year.

My woman eats eggs before she touches any perch filets, eggs + milk, seasoned bread crumbs, hot oil = yummy!!!

Another hint, cook the perch eggs before you do your filets, always use fresh oil, twice used oil is not good for flavor. I go through vegetable oil like water, should probably get a diesel truck with all that I throw away. I only use oil 1 time, and if doing a bunch, maybe refresh the pan with some new. Also, if the perch eggs are from the jumbos, like 12"++, they need to be split open and may come out kinda greasy. If you use the smaller perch eggs they are much better, and the oil doesn't penetrate the egg sack. So they come out crunchy on outside, but good on the inside. Also, the closer to spawn it is, the more ripe and flavorful they get, perch eggs through the ice are the best, as any coldwater fish usually is.

Okay I need to put my input into this post. God rest his soul but my father was a die harded fisherman. He loved it either out in the boat, on the shore or specially on hardwater.
I can remember my dad would be extra careful with the perch eggs. I have to admit I haven't caught many lately with eggs but when I do they are my treat. My dad would take the perch eggs and remove the eggs from the sac. He would take the eggs then and mix then into a egg omelet. Put a little milk in it and the add cheese or chunks of ham or another meat into it. My lord where they delious.

Sorry Skidplate but i would never eat salmon eggs they are discusting.
A bad day fishing is better than being at work.

Gentlemen,

Try this.
Break the egg sack, put in small frying pan or small pot, add some good olive oil, crushed garlic and salt and pepper. Can add some good quality Parmesan for a  kicker.
Heat thoroughly thru/fry'em up till they are done.

Eat with crackers and of course your favorite beer.

You will have to love them

You guys with all of your olive oil and garlic and parmesan got me thinking of trying them again:).  I've been feeding them all to my chickens.  They turn them into really good eggs.
I'm Gonna go to bed...I'm gonna change my pants and go to bed.
