I spoke with the folks at ICS tonight and folks that have tried getting on have gotten wet.  Looks like I'll be there next weekend myself.  Can't wait to get out on the big lake.

I haven't heard of people fishing on it yet, but after a cold night like this I'm sure it will be fishable saturday morning. I'm going to fish huron bay in the morning. There's been quite a few whitefish caught recently. I'll give an update tomorrow night on the keweenaw bay ice, but hopefully by then it will be great and everyone will know haha.

I'm going to be giving it a shot tomorrow morning.  I'll wait until there's light though.  ;-)

Chris how was it today? I'm going to try it tomorrow (monday) morning. I have a red mercury cougar and fish a black frabill venture if any of yall see me come say hi.

Oh I also usually have a large pile of fish in front of the shanty about waist deep.

Monday am might be the only fishable day this week.  With the north/northeast wind this week the ice could get pounded into slush and piled on shore.  Winter storm watch in Houghton county and special weather statement for Baraga.

It's early in the season so don't take chances.  Better days are coming. :)

Went out on the head of the bay this morning. It was pretty useless. The guys I talked to agreed. Got a 25 inch and 30 inch northern and a little perch. As for the coho, I don't know where on earth they are. Saw one small school of herring, out of spearing range. 2 inches of ice. I wouldn't mind if the ice got blown out and we got new ice without snow on it! That ice would be a lot thicker by now if there wasn't snow on it. Probably a half inch of ice by the lighthouse. I'll be going up to the harbor in the morning to see if I can't get a splake or two.

How much ice can be expected to form with the cold temps we have coming up??  1, 2, 3+?? inches of ice in a day?  I really have no idea and am curious. ??? Obviously it depends on different factors, but given minimal winds, how much can be added in a day?

I think it depends on the wind and how much snow is on the ice. Even an inch of ice will insulate it enough to really slow down the freezing. I've heard (from the old timers) that under the right conditions you can get 4 or 5 inches of black ice over night. I have yet to see that. Who knows.

yea  id definetly say that snow plays a major factor!  if ya notice  you only see slushy areas on lakes in cold weather where there is snow.  snow insulates   thats why eskimos build igloos  LOL
