Round Gobies
« on: Jan 04, 2017, 06:09 PM »
I live in central new York and primarily fish Oneida lake for Walleye perch and pans, this past season myself and some of my buds have experienced a decline in the numbers of fish caught on the soft water. we have speculated that the rather increase of the round gobies population has affected our catch rates. We have also been trying to adapt our fishing styles with the changing food source in our lake.

has this happened to anyone in other parts of the country and what have you done to change to keep up with the ecosystem in your respective lakes.

thanks

Hey Broohiegilly, there was a big hatch of shade this season and that doesn't help the fishing and then there feeding on gobies also.
I caught a gobie about 3" long on a worm harnes, I put it on a bucktail jig and cast it out to drown it(DEC said to kill them), first cast I hooked a nice eye, that killed it. I say match the hatch.
Keep your bait higher off the bottom, that may help. @)

The round goby is also a ravenous feeder of fisheggs, walleyes don't nest or protect their young so the gobies are probably feasting on the spawn. If the State would get their head outa their a$$ and legalize them for bait, the goby population would be a lot less, another stupid rule in the Land of Taxes and regulations!

F4W, Why make them legal ? That will get them in every lake and pond in the state, Is that what you want ?

Yeah, dumb idea....make them legal to use and transport. We have to have regulations because people can't do the correct/right thing to begin with. SMH.  ???
