clipping fins on shiners
« on: Jan 15, 2015, 05:58 AM »
Does anyone clip the fins on one side of shiners when ice fishing with them from poles or tipups?I started doing this awhile back and by clipping all the fins on one side the minnow really seems to attract predator fish better then just using a untouched minnow in my opinion.

I've been doing this for the last couple of years... I've been trying to figure out if there is a "magic fin" that works better than others...  dorsal, tail, right side, etc... doesn't seem to matter

Tip Up !!!

I've been doing it to suckers for years. I can see where it would help with shiners ;)

Well the secrets out now lol. Why yes ill clip half of the rear fin off. If your body was at 32-34deg, how far would you want to chase a fast lil bait around.  They like an easy meal, sometimes even dead minnows work great.
Keep those hooks sharp, or watch em swim away!

How much of an increase in flags when you trim the fins vs whole fins?
It is MY responsibility to make sure my children can enjoy fishing years from now. Make sure your kids can fish.  If you see something ILLEGAL Contact the Massachusetts Environmental Police Radio Room at 1-800-632-8075 at any hour of the day. They might show up if there is enough staff working.

In just my opinion it seems about a 40 % increase for me.Also helps a lot when using large shiners from setting flags off when they get to active.

It all relates to the "struggling fish" affect the shiners will have on predators.
I fresh shiner will swim and try to get away as quickly as it can : It knows there are predators around!
Clipped fins prevent the fish from swimming quickly, and it ends up foundering erratically, which in turn signals "FREE MEAL" to the predators!
