Black spots on pike?
« on: Jan 15, 2011, 09:34 PM »
I went out early this morning to try my hand a pike fishing in Colchester and did okay, icing 10 pike and one bass (my biggest pike was 29 inches, the rest were pickerel size.) I do have one question -- the majority of the small pike were covered in these weird black bumps -- they looked almost like aphids. Have any of you seen these? Any idea what they are? I have pics, but won't be able to post them until I'm back in Boston.

I don't think it was that, either. They were pimple sized.

Wow! I thought lamprey marks were about the size of a quarter. Maybe it is lamprey then.

We used to call those spots -warm water spots"-never hurt anyone who ate the fish.

they say that if a body of water has this parasite and you find it on fish then it is a very healthy ecosystem

Those are not lamprey.  Lamprey don't start feeding on fish till they are about 6" long or so.
