with all the grease and oil that leaks out of a boat in the summer you would think you would never catch fish if this was true

The only effective fish repellent I know of is new ice fishing gear. Just go out and buy a new portable shanty, new rod & reel, some new jigs, and hit the ice. Odds are you won't catch enough to sneeze at on your first trip out!

Not sure what kind of oil you have coming off your blades but since oil tends to float it may be transferring to your jig when you drop it down. Sounds like kind of a unique problem I've never had to deal with.
Are you using a gas auger?

LOL....on the new gear Lobes.....I don't think it would bother the fish unless its pooling up on the hole and coating your bait or something.

Yeah, I was thinking it's something like that. That could give your bait a funky taste the fish don't care for.

If you're using a hand auger and still leaving oil or grease on the water, I'd fill the bathtub with hot water and with a good amount of dish soap I'd put the ole scrub brush to it. Wouldn't take that long and it will cure this problem.
I wouldn't want to soak my baits with grease or oil (petroleum based) every time I dropped a line.
