Ice Hut Finished!!! 8x12 Build
« on: Oct 14, 2014, 07:02 AM »
I posted some of these in another section but decided to make a new topic. I followed a similar build to burty12 which was almost exactly what I had planned.(except for the stove cut out). I added a few features that work better for me. I have under seat storage and I raised the stove to give me a storage area for wood. Overall I am very pleased. I live in northern ontario so it gets very cold and there is lots of ice. I have both a snow machine and a quad to pull it out with as it is heavy. It is well insulate with styrofam as well as spray foam. I will include a few construction pics as well. :o

Very nice shack. Will the ceiling have the same knotty pine as the walls? Looks real comfortable.

Very nice looking shanty.
I have always liked the wood heat. It's just more homey than propane.
Iv'e thought about building one but I have 3 portables and I like to be more mobile and fish a lot of different lakes.

Nice set up!  Where are you located?  I'm guessing that it is some place that gets good thick ice ; - )

Im located in Northern ontario Canada so yes the ice gets thick!!!. Corndog I have a little generator to power a light, TV and radio etc... added a CO detector as its a wood stove. I have 4 windows that open for ventilation. I will post pics of the under seat storage soon. I took them but forgot to bring my camera in. :o

Here is a pic of under the seat storage.  Each side has about 8'x2'x6" under the seat. Works great to store my blankets, pillows and extra fishing rods. I also spray foamed it all with about a half inch to keep it warm and cozy. ;D

Did you weigh this at all?  I'm really interested in doing a smaller version of this but I'm in Central WI so I will need to watch the ice a bit more  :(

Also, what was the purpose of the indent for the furnace and the door?  Would it have been easier to just build it on a square frame?

I havent weighed it but it is heavy for sure. The purpose of the bump out is just to give alot more room for fishing in the shack. If I didnt have it the woodstove would take up alot of room. I left the space under the woodstove to store firewood. You could save alot as well with propane heat. I prefer woodstoves because of the dry heat. Plus i installed shelves and made the under seat storage. Im not sure what you meant by the door.

If you built a 6 or 8 foot version of this it would be alot lighter.

So I'm thinking about building something like this. If you were to do it all over again would you change anything and why? I'm assuming your floor is 48 inches wide, is that wide enough? Do you feel if you were to go 60 inches wide that would have more benefits? I'm only asking because my trailer has 65 inches between the wheel wells.

;D luke did i ever send you a reply? my memory is bad. The only thing I would change is my flooring. I used outdoor carpet and it doesn't dry well. I'm going to try rubber instead next year. I really love this shack. If you can go wider that sounds good luke. I was limited to the width of my 5 x 12 trailer.
