Is this a grass pickerel???
« on: Jan 14, 2006, 04:38 PM »
Was fishing a small pond Friday that only has Pickerel and White Perch.

Caught a real small pickerel and took a pic as a joke since it was only about twice as big as the Shiner it tried to eat.  But looking through the pics, he looks different than the chain Pickerel I am used to.

Here are the normal markings for a pickerel in this pond.

Is the small Pickerel a Chain or a Grass??  Im not very good at ID'ing fish and have never seen a grass pickerel before.

Looks like one with the band thru the eye. Don't think they get more than 10" or so. Been a long time since I've seen one.

Yup, the suborbital line shows that its a pickerel, and the markings show that it is a Grass Pickerel. They get up to around 15" maximum.

I say grass pickerel.  That would be a neat fish for a fish tank.

Looks like a nice Grassy, they share a lot of the same characteristics as the chains. They both have fully scaled cheeks and opercle(gill flap). They both have 4 mandibular pores(holes on the bottom rim of the lower jaw) and they both have vertical black bands below the eyes, the grassy and the reds slant slightly toward the rear. The pattern of their markings is the real ID factor. Red's are grassys with red tails and lower fins.
