How thick?
« on: Nov 16, 2014, 10:27 PM »
Newbie here, been lurking for awhile. I just started ice fishing last winter in about January when the ice was plenty thick(3+ feet). I'm chomping at the bit to get out this year, but pretty nervous about going out on early season ice. People I have talked to say 1 1/2 - 2 inches is plenty thick, that doesn't seem like a lot between myself and ice cold water. Just trying to get other's experiences and advice. I'm sure this has been discussed plenty on the forum, so sorry in advance if I brought up a subject that has been talked about too much already. just a new guy trying to learn

Depends on what you know about the lake.  Some lakes make a solid 3inches and its no issue.  Some have a lot of warm springs that make early ice really sketchy.

Generally 3 to 4 inches is a good safe bet.  I like you are chomping at the bit to get on the ice!

My secret is Ice Cold Bud Light. Feed them fish alot of wobblies and they jump out of water, into your shack, and beg to go home with you..
Anytime Mike. You and Lippy kill me with you guy's schedule though. How would it be to fish on a Tuesday or a Wednesday  ::)
Be safe.

thinnest I've fished is 2 1/2. Went this weekend on a shallow body here in town and it had 3 1/2. I've only been ice fishing about 5 years now and I think the key is knowledge, wisdom, and an Ice chisel/spud bar. You gota be able to know what the ice you're about to walk on is like so a chisel is a must have. That's all I use to punch my holes too. Pack light. Tackle, rods, a way to make a hole, and of course the vex :) that's it. Go with a buddy if you can first ice. If not let someone know where you're going, and when you'll be back. I just ordered some ice spikes this year. For under 10 bucks by most companies I think that's cheap insurance. I highly recommend watching some youtube videos on how to get yourself out if you fall in too. Very important to have a plan. I really like the one done by Uncut Angling. Just search uncut angling ice safety. I've learned what will hold me(so far :) and what my comfort level is. I'm 5'9" and weigh 145. Good Luck!
A group of ice fishermen is a chatter or chill, although the term loony is often used, particularly by wives of ice fishermen.

Welcome to the Ice Shanty antilla307! I'm embarrassed to say how thin of ice I've fished on, but suffice it to say it qualified more as 'sketchy' than it did 'thin'. Be safe out there!

4" of CLEAR ice is about my limit. It's all about ice quality though. If the ice isn't great quality you can still fall through thicker ice. Just depends on your area and normal conditions.

2" to walk on 4-6" for small quad.  Best fishing is often 1st ice.  As a kid we walked on 1/2".
