Best time of day to fish?
« on: Jan 13, 2012, 07:13 AM »
What do people find the best time of day to ice fish? And if you need a specific fish i am mainly talking about pike and perch. Thanks...

Traditionally for me 7-10 and 2-5 have usually been the best times for me.  Also depends on the time of year and what I am fishing for.

I second that, Dad always calls it the "morning run" and then the "afternoon run"

I fish for Walleyes a lot, but i did win a couple of Derby's with pike and i caught them at 6:20 am.My best time to just fish for any species is between 4am and 11 am, then again from 4 pm to 10 pm.

I have caught my big pikes (big as in 10lbers plus) randomly throughout the day with no real pattern. I seem to feel as if there is a flurry of activity on Lake Champlain around 10-11 in the am though???? Maybe im nuts... I always have the best luck in the mornings all around from a numbers game...

I usually have the best luck in the morning hours.  Really depends on the spot/day/time of year.  Every time I think there is some kind of pattern, I have a day where the bite never stops, other days, it never starts!

The late morning bite on Champlain has always puzzled me

i haven't had luck with pike, but perch always seem to bite better in the late afternoon. In general, i find i have better luck early in the morning then again just before sunset. I know earlier is better but some days it is hard to roll out at 5am.  :-\

I think for pike it can be anytime but I don't typically stay out until dark.  Therefore, I can't really say the afternoon bite is better than the early morning bite.  I'm usually the guy parked at the bait shop waiting for them to open.  I know my eperience in late ice is that it can really shut down hard after only an hour or two of daylight.   Of course that is not always the case but I like to have my holes drilled before sunrise.

I should clarify that we are perch jerkers from way back. I am a total novice when it comes to pike or other "big game" fish so our experience is that there are a couple times a day when the perch are biting better than others

We have found when fishing Caspian for lakers  that there are three runs.. 5-8 am, 11-1, and then a slow run from 3-6.  After a few years of trial and error, we found there was no reason to be out there any earlier on that lake, but look out for that early run, because more than once has caught us chasing flags while trying to set out the tip ups.
Silly rookies, traps are for animals!!  Tilts are for kids!!  Fishermen use tip ups!

Any time you can get fish is a best time. Especially this year for a lot of us here that has limited or no ice.
