master anglers.
« on: Jan 10, 2018, 08:53 AM »
Just wondering if anyone has caught a master angler fish so far this year. I would love to see the pictures. I landed a 14.75" yellow perch yesterday.

I pretty much release them all.i couldn't get the salmon revived because it was 80 degrees that day and the salmon were going belly up this year before spawning due to heat and river water temp.the steelhead would've been a great looking mount.nice perch you got too..i never get into perch around here.

I caught a MA bluegill (10.5”) about 5 years ago and the DNR didn’t recognize the body of water it was caught on. Even though I used the name of the lake that they listed on their website in their lake maps section... I never bothered returning my information with gps coordinates so I never got the award. I have the memory though :)

All they give you is a patch, I wouldn't wanna fish and tell where I caught a trophy fish anyhow
If it passes the ruler test, put it in the ice chest. Hook it and cook it.

I get it . definetly  something to be proud of.i rarely take measurement or send my fish stats to the dnr for a patch but should've started when I was younger.my fishing vest would be highly decorated.lol.my theory is theres always going to be a  bigger fish out there.hope I catch it.lol

Ive caught around 2-dozen master angler fish, most I photographed with a measuring tape and released, since I prefer to eat younger fish with less contaminants and finer texture. Have no more room for mounted fish, anyway...and no desire to publicize my catches or locations. Same goes for my deer.  I did enter a bear in the books though, dont know what got into me.  LOL  One of my fish would have been #2 in the state.

yeah I don't turn many in either.im proud of my catches and that's what counts to me.as long as I get a  good pic and weight.one I wish I sent in was a 18"speck I caught when I was younger.it was so big that I won 3rd place in a bass tourney because it was so amazing the judges said.lol.i ate the damn thing..lol.my friend has the pic but ive not seen or heard from him in 20 years..i don't mount fish either I try to release all my trophy fish nowadays.my thinking is theres always a bigger one.like I caught a 21 1/2 bass when I was 16.my dad mounted it and I still have that mount but a few years later I caught a 24" inch 8lb. monster I took a pic and let it go..now that we have killer camera tech I see no reason to keep trophies.

If uploading pictures on this site was easy I would post my pics .  I get about ten master angler fish per year , I have never caught a perch that could be entered .

...I have never caught a perch that could be entered .

I have caught quite a few, and since they dont take up much wall space, I got 4 of them mounted and arranged in a "fantasy stringer" arrangement. They were not caught at the same time, I just added fish here and there until there was no more room.  3 of them are over 15", one was just over 14" as I recall.  We release quite a few that are over 13" but under 14", too big to eat but too small to mount  LOL

Hey Gambler, we are fish snobs.  LOL   When fish get "too big", they are a coarse texture and accumulate too many contaminants (mercury, pcb, dioxin, etc.)  We just prefer smaller sizes and release the big ones to spawn.
