Advice on catching trout through the ice?
« on: Mar 02, 2016, 08:09 PM »
I was wondering if anyone is willing to give any general advice on catching trout through the ice? I'm thinking about doing the Webster Lake Ice derby, and it seems like trout are the thing to catch for this. I was going to try to learn some things on my own before it got warm out at Willand pond, but dont think its safe there right now.

I primarily do jigging, but I have a couple tip ups also. I've only been ice fishing for a bit over a month, so I am still very new, but at the same time, I have caught fish everytime I've gone out, including sunday's 3rd place crappie. Are there things that I would want to use for trout that would also fit my panfish tackle?

Thanks,
Mike

trout and panfish will go for the same things I've caught plenty of rainbows on tungsten fly jigs, small spoons and other panfish type lures. a small jig with some type of larvae or worm will catch rainbows. it also depends on what type of trout you plan to target.

Are you positive there's a Webster lake derby? Last I heard it was a no go. What's the date?

The local hardware store still had the derby poster up for Webster Lake the other day , and it is slated for this weekend.  I`ve seen local FB posts from local fishermen that they are headed to the derby.  You could call Bryant & Lawrence Hardware in Tilton, Bill sells tickets and some bait and tackle. No shiners though. It`s on!

Well that's just it, not only is all this info within the last few pages without even searching it's already March and the info will go unused and forgotten and be asked again next year 30 times. I'm all for helping a fellow fisherman but we've all gone over this so many times already this year,?break out the dead horse pic. The information is never retained I don't get it

http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=331364.0... and just because I'm feeling extra generous today because I'll be on vacation  next week in Maine for a few days...you can read this when you finish...if you can't catch trout after reading this...take up knitting.

you should really try for yourself and test different techniques then ask the questions.

should I go north or west?
should I jig up and down or side to side?

it's all good, perhaps the guy asking is a youngster and is not familar with this site. if so, use worms on your tip ups

Playing devil's advocate for a second....
A couple months ago there was a "guy" on the ME shanty that asked all the above questions over a period of time.

One night, he started a post with "What's all you guy's FAVORITE SPOT/LAKE?"

I gave myself the "double face palm"!

Well, those ME boys are just a "few" miles north of us.  ;)
They gave the same answers we would...Coordinates to the local sewage plant etc..

After several of those posts the "guy" was catching on.
He posted up, "BTW, I'm eleven years old".   ;D
