Clam 1 man flip over
« on: Dec 17, 2022, 06:36 AM »
I’m considering the purchase of a
Clam X100 Thermal. I really like the fact it has no extending poles, just flip & go!
According to the specs, Pack size with seats: L 56" x W 42" x H 30".
The 30” height is a killer for me. I have a Ford F-150 with a topper & side doors. I installed a deck across the top of the pick-up box top. So I have about 20” of space below the deck.
It says 30” with seat….can the seat be removed & achieve the 20” height?
If so, how difficult is it to remove?

Dude - you picked the wrong sled.   ;D

Have you looked at the Eskimo Wide 1 XR Thermal?  Here, let me help: COLLAPSED SIZE - 57"(L) x 36"(W) x 18"(H).  The bottom loop expands to give you 17 SQ FT of fishing area vs 14 SQ FT in the Clam.  It costs $100 to $200 less than the Clam depending on where you buy it.  You may want to rethink your purchase.   ;D

The Inferno has been replaced by the Wide 1 that comes in 2 sizes: Wide 1 Thermal & Wide 1 XR Thermal.  The XR is 4" taller when set up, has 1/4 cubic foot more sled capacity, and 17.5 vs 14.8 sq ft of fishing area.  I just bought the Wide 1 XR.  Nice set up amd way better than the EVO1 it replaced.  Loving it so far.

I was checking out the clams at bass pro the other day and they look nice but I wish that the windows were removable.  I find myself pulling the windows on my Eskimo frequently to check tulips when they fog up.

Thin ice where tulips grow. :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:  I’d have a new legend if the windows were removable or still had the mesh. To a fault I’m brand loyal.

Yeah, I don't understand why Clam doesn't like removeable windows.

I ended up with a x100 Thermal Legend XT. There is 22” clearance under my deck & the x100 measures 21 1/2”.
I hope I don’t miss the removable windows that my Sierra Thermal had.

For the first season I didn’t realize the Sierra had removable windows! I rarely have rods outside that I need to keep an eye on.
I fish by myself 99% of the time.
For me, the Eskimo extendable poles were frustrating. Raising or lowering the poles evenly without getting them lopsided & stuck, just wore me out. The red plastic release buttons fell apart a couple times. Then there is the travel cover. I use an ATV so I need to use a cover to keep from throwing snow etc into the tub & shelter. Everything has to be perfectly in place for it to fit. When it’s windy, sub zero temps make the fabric difficult to tuck properly.
Over the past seasons there have been numerous times I should have moved to a better location. The thought of tearing down, packing & setting back up  made me shudder!
Maybe I’ll find things with this new shelter that don’t suit me. But, it’s fun to get new toys.
