Rainbow Bait
« on: Jan 30, 2010, 08:12 PM »
What do you use for bait when rigging tip ups for rainbows...

I usually use minnows::::: pike-Shiners/walleye-Bass minnows/perch&crappies-fatheads

What size minnows should I use for rainbows and browns?
I've been slappin crappies since 1995.

Try Rosie Red Minnows.

There's something about the color that Rainbows love.

On a whole I don't do well with shiners for Rainbows. However the Browns seem to like them. For Rainbows I like mealworms. I put one meallie and one powerbait honey worm on a hook. That way if a fish rips off the real meallie I'm still in the game. Sometimes a Rainbow will miss in the first pass but will come back and take the honey worm. I also get flags using Power Bait Trout Nuggets, Gulph Salmon eggs, nothing on the corn yet. I really perfer jigging for Rainbows. I like small 1/16oz spoons with a single hook that is dressed up with a wax worm.

Thats odd that you usually get browns on shiners and rainbows on meal worms. We have been fishing a small lake that has bows and browns. So far all we have caught are browns, but we are only using shiners or fatheads. I guess it could be why.

Nightcrawlers or smelt work well for me and like someone else said powerbait is good.

If you have a lake that has both Rainbows and Brown and you are just catching the Browns on shiners, how deep of water are you fishing? It has been my observation that you have the best shot at Bows in shallow water. Almost 100% of my Bows are caught in 10 feet or less. Try coming into the shallows and ditch the shiners, I like when I can see the top of the weeds. I believe the Bows come into this type of water for 2 reasons first because of the bug life (scuds, larvae and tube worms) and its also a pre-spawn area. Most of my Browns have been in drop off along weedlines or in deeper open water basins.

Mealworms, wax worms, crickets work amazingly well but die after about 10 minutes.

Then your normal Powerbait, salmon eggs, egg clusters/sacks etc.

All work well and depends on the day for what the trout are foraging on.

I just spent the day out on the ice for rainbows.  I am new to the trout game through the ice so I tried all kinds of things.  We didn't do anything on the shiners.  The hot bait was meal worms tipped with a little power bait in really shallow water.

I got one the other day on a shiner while fishing for salmon, surprised it hit such a big bait. Gonna try some other things next week on a couple of my other tips-ups.

Mealworms work good.

If you are going to use minnows, try Rosie Reds.

Remember, Rainbows like gaudy colors - Red, Orange, Florescent Green, Hot Pink.

Hope this helps,

in the trout lakes i fish we are not allowed to use minnows.  I use nightcrawlers, tipped with a meal worm and have had decent success.  Tight Lines,Chris

depending on the lake, night crawlers, mealworms, maggots.   If I am unsure or at a new body of water I start with a nightcrawler

My first choice would be smelt, and then second, would be berkley power eggs and if i cant get either of those, then i am forced to use shiners. and i hate shiners.lol

Try Rosie Red Minnows.

I think the  color really turns the trout on.
