North Idaho Ice 2015/16
« on: Dec 31, 2015, 07:03 PM »
Fished Fernan and upper Twin today 12-31-15. First time on the ice this season.
Fernan 8:30 - 12:00.  5 tip ups and 5 poles looking for pike and perch.  Ice was partially clear from 3.5 to 4 inches with 2 inches of light fluffy snow on top.  We fished down on the far end by the last turnout from5-11 for.  Another gentleman arrived just before us with a line of 5 tip ups.  He had one go up and saw it take line but missed.  We had none all day.  We did see a few perch and bass on the underwater camera and I got to break out the new birthday present from last year a Marcum Showdown.  Ice was cracking under foot if we both stood by each other.
Upper Twin:  Punky 4.5 inches of snow, slush and ice.  Good ice was 2 inches.  I did not feel as comfortable on this ice as I did Fernan.  Met 3 groups of fisherman out from the launch catching the usual small perch.  We each caught 3 dinks and left after about 30 minutes.  A great day on the ice with my brother in law Zack. Lunch at Meltz off of Ramsey road in CDA.  Grill cheese like you have never had before.  It was worth the 15 minute wait as the place was packed.  If you heard stories about these great grilled cheese places I highly recommend giving these guys a try.  Temps look to be colder to make some more ice up North.  Tight lines,  Packernut

You fished the east end. Did you see anyone venture across along the east side shoreline?

Too long ?   Most archives are that way ~ And, what's not to like about being all in one place.         ???

Being buttered all over the universe doesn't allow a good grip on anything, just saying.

Lake was completely capped over.  I did not see anyone venture out other then us in the bay.  8 degrees close to midnight.  Ice will be forming nicely tonight.

I started a new thread for myself.  When I logged in I got so excited about the ice on Twin then realized it was from 2007.  At least now I will see 2015/2016.

Idahogator,  I hope to run into you sometime this year on the ice.  I think we met once but it may have been a few years back.  I will have the green Sportsman's Warehouse shanty and I will of course have something Packer on when fishing.

Let the ice fishing begin......

Wife and I took a drive around noon. Fernan was froze but no one fishing, Hauser froze and 1 guy out there, Avondale there were a good dozen people fishing and hockey skating.

Sportsman Acess on Hayden had a few fishing but you need to walk from the very top. Very little parking, hasn't been touched with a plow.

Black Lake had 3-4" of milky ice with 3 inches of snow on top of that.  It was fairly solid at the North end. The south end really doesn't have any access unless you know somebody and they let youy park in  a plowed out private property area.  The ice on the south end was only 2-3" woith a slush layer on top.  Middle had open water a week ago but not thick enough yet and access is a problem.
Caught one pike on tip-ups and just two perch.

Packernut- Thanks for starting a new thread about local lakes. I know of several people that thought " North Idaho Ice" was to long and needed to be cleaned up. I went up to Shepard lk today and the ice was 4 in thick about 100 ft out. I didn't go much further out as I was not interested in an "unplanned Polar Bear plunge". As usual sm. Perch. I did see 3 guys out on the ice at the N. end of Cocollala. Any reports on how thick that ice is?

A buddy and I fished upper Twin from 11 to 2 or so. There were 6 others when we got there but we didn't walk over and talk to them.

Ice:  8 inches layered with 2" water/slush on top in spots. about 3-5 inches snow on top the rest. Not the greatest.

Good news was Lakes Highway Dist plowed the parking lot at the far boat ramp today.

Looks like the guy that fell though a few days back went in on lower Twin not far from the channel. Talked to a fellow with a cabin on upper and he tried to cross down by the channel on Sunday and claims he fell in a few feet from shore.

Caught a few dozen little perch 4-7" and 2 crappie 9". First crappie I've caught on Twin.

We put out 9 tip/ups for pike but got no hits, damn!

Be safe

I am very interested in trying to get on Cocolalla soon. Encouraged to hear people are pulling eater perch out! It's been pretty warm down here in Pullman the past few days; how has it been up there? I'm not going to make the trip until I know the ice is SOUND. :)

I haven't fished Hauser but walked out to check the ice and anglers had been on it. Plenty of holes drilled but all iced over and I didn't have my gear so I couldn't drill for thickness.

I went to Mirror Lk. today for some Bluebacks. The ice was 4 in with the top 1-1.5 in being water and slush. I checked a hole that was partially froze over. It was about 2 in thick. I gingerly  moved away. I did not catch any thing. I talked to the guy at the "Resort" and he told me a guy went through the ice on Friday.
