fish attractors
« on: Jan 10, 2006, 10:01 PM »
I see where NH state fisheries is going to use discarded Christmas trees as fish attractors/artificial reefs,.."Where Allowed" have any of you done this? Is there a formula to what you use to keep them in place and upright? Did you feel they worked? I live on a lake that has weedy ends and almost devoid of cover in the main body. In SCUBA diving I have noticed that predator fish always seem to be hanging around some structure esp if there is little around.

I have done it in another state where I used to live and It does work well . We used plastic coated aircraft cable bought at the local hardware store and a couple of cinder blocks for weight so they cant shift .

We use fish attractants up here in the Adirondacks in a couple of reservoirs with little natural
structure

It is AMAZING stuff!  Works like a charm

This is an interesting subject. Wouldn't there regulations that forbid or limit this practice  ??? such as environmental concerns ? Perhaps by the EPA or state agencies like the DNR or BLM ? Unless they were removed when you leave. Also curious how long would it take for fish to gather about these, would you need to place them a day or two ahead of time ? I have heard about using artificial cover and that there are some available commercially that are dropped in on a cable or line but are they legal in every state ?

I remember reading somewhere about a state or conservation club using excess or donated PVC pipe to make fish attractors ( structure) in some places. It' s supposed to be pretty decent after a while and non deteriorating like trees or xmas trees.
I hope it's donated stuff, the pipe is cheap, but the elbows are what really cost some $$$

Here is a dumped tree I caught on a local NY lake (silver lake) while walleye trolling!
I pulled it up with 6lb. test and this only shows a 1/3 of it! HEAVY &$#%#  ;D

The bonus of this is... If you are lucky enough to pull one up, they are usually loaded with other peoples tackle!
 ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D
This one was... few bottom bouncers, few Rapalas and other various stickbaits and some nice lead weights too!

I put 2 trees together in my pond and they work well i put 2 wooden crate 2 by 2 by 5 feet long and the fish will hang above them but not in them :)

I also saw on another forum a portable structure that you drop down a hole. Punch a couple holes around you, drop these in and they hold the fish in your area. They look like weeds............Patch

Thorn apple trees work very well, they last a lot
longer than evergreen trees.
