10-12lb flouro, size 4 or 6 octopus hook. Large shiner/smelt/dace anywhere from 1-4ft off bottom in 30+ FOW. That's the classic setup but togue can be caught in very shallow water at times when they're chasing smelt close to shore.

Also we fish some live bait and lay dead bait right on bottom, seems like they go from one to the other through out the day.

they are common I have seen them in numerous bait shops as the name says look for the red tipped fins

All my Big lake trout have been caught right under the ice. I believe when trout feed they wound smelts or bait fish these wounded one float up until they are supended up against the ice and large trout travel with dorsel fin against ice and clean up the wounded bait fish. three of my over 10lb fish have been caught in this manner. I have jigged many smaller one off bottom.
