Big tip ups, small fish
« on: Oct 30, 2011, 01:17 PM »
I target perch when I fish and fish primarily with tip ups. I use mostly Frabill Arctic Fire tip ups and over the last several years experienced a 40 - 50% flag to hookup ratio (much worse when the perch are small). I have read where some guys believe that the flags tripping on some smaller tip ups spooks the fish and causes drops. I was wondering if anyone has tried a larger, heavier tip up or tried weighting the smaller tip ups to improve hook ups?  Thanks

i have the frabil pro thermal tip-ups.  i have about a 97% hook-up rate with them even on fish that i can't understand how they even fit the bait in their mouth, being the bait is almost the same size as them.  I got mine to this point by adding a small barrel swivel above a barrel swivel that my leader and hook is attached to.  i found that when they trip off the flag the slip sinker takes tension off the fish by letting line slide through.  The weight of the sinker i cant remember off the top of my head, but i use the smallest i can get away with.  if i slowly drop my bait down the hole the minnow should be able to swim against the weight, but if you drop it quick the minnow turns on its back and sinks.   at least that's the way i do it with a small tip-up.

If you're local regs support it, get yourself, or build yourself a set of tip downs.  They are much better suited for perch and crappies than tip ups are.

2X on the tip downs you will never regret the change.
Easy to build if your handy with tools.
Tip ups are for sharks.

Using a tipup like the Fish Brother tipups eliminated the movement due to the flag tripping for me.

There is a bunch of posts on Lake Erie tip downs.  The easiest to make a use.  Can't be beat for perch and crappies.
The Greenhornet's caught more fish then you've lied about, Gustafson!
