Before or after a front?
« on: Dec 13, 2009, 02:28 PM »
When is the fishing better? When a front is moving in or after it is gone?

ABSOLUTELY !!!
I can't think of a better time to go. Actually, I have the best results when the barometer is moving. When I kept a journal it was a toss up as far as which was better. Changing weather gets them going.

Most say barometric pressure at its lowest is when fish feed, lowest pressure is just before a front

I pay no attention to it myself as I fish to get out and enjoy nature. Catching a lot of fish is a bonus to the fun.

There's too many other variables for me to really be able to confidently say. From what I hear most of the time, right before is the time to go.

I too, just go out when I can, I do look at bar. pressure to see where it's going just to give me better/less confidence when I'm going. If the fish are biting, that makes it better. Smitty

I wish I can plan my fishing based on the front, but I generally have better luck on a low pressure.   I always remember the cloud line pattern in the sky.

Over the years, I have noticed a falling barometer is best for me.  Post warm front is usually best.  Pre warm front can be some of the slowest times.

Falling barometer works best for me, but if you wait until it bottoms out,  you've missed out.

Before, during, after doesn't matter for me. Just adapt to what the fish are doing and more importantly what you need to do too take advantage of it. They're down there someplace and will eat if the right combo is placed in their face, regardless of weather or time

I think that its more important during early ice because the fish are still shallow in the weeds and on the edges. As winter progresses as everyone knows they move to deeper water were pressure doesnt seem to affect them as much. Its kinda like open water. I go when I can go and do my best to find active fish sometimes I find them sometimes I dont. My grampa always said "you cant catch em on the couch"....
YOU CANT CATCH EM ON THE COUCH!!
