Whitley County 1/24/15
« on: Jan 24, 2015, 09:28 PM »
A friend and I opened up a ton of old holes with my drill before first light, and we were able to get on some fish.  Staying on them was another matter, as they roamed around a lot.  I wouldn't be surprised if we popped at least 75 holes today, as we tried anywhere from 8-36' of water.  Color didn't seem as important as size.  Small jigs resulted in more bites.  Most bites were super light (although a few randoms pounded it), and there were a lot more lookers than takers.  We spent 6 hours on the ice, but only got a handful during the last 1.5 hours and called it a day at 1:30PM.  I ended up with 29, and my friend probably had another couple dozen.  My fish:

I see quite a few Redear in there.  Those suckers love to park on your lure and drive you nuts staring at your finder trying to get them to raise up or bite your jig.  After seeing them while sight fishing they often will just sit an inch from the lure and stare at it for minutes then just swim off or suck it in and blow it out before you can even react or see your spring or line move.  They were picky and light biters for us today too with us only getting 1 in 10 or so to bite.  Maybe the storm coming in tomorrow will get them going.

I've seen this a few times myself.  It's amazing how long it can take one to decide to finally eat!

One thing that sometimes will work with redear is put it below them.  They normally feed down on snails and wigglers in the bottom, so sometimes if you put it below them they will eat it.  Seems to work best when you are marking them a foot or so off bottom, but they can be finicky biters that is for sure.
