Nice Mess!!
After seeing them while sight fishing they often will just sit an inch from the lure and stare at it for minutes then just swim off or suck it in and blow it out before you can even react or see your spring or line move. They were picky and light biters for us today too with us only getting 1 in 10 or so to bite.
I've seen this a few times myself. It's amazing how long it can take one to decide to finally eat!
One thing that sometimes will work with redear is put it below them. They normally feed down on snails and wigglers in the bottom, so sometimes if you put it below them they will eat it. Seems to work best when you are marking them a foot or so off bottom, but they can be finicky biters that is for sure.
Snagging them works great too!
