so i have been trying to trap bait in southern RI for 2 years now without much luck. Just wondering what type of areas do you set your traps in or if you have any tips? Getting ready for the ice shouldnt be long now!!

I set my traps today in small ponds that look like run off from somewhere.  Not a big pond but it is loaded with shiners

Thats okay Billy... we will excuse you on your birthday.

I set my trap at 9am this morning and went and hauled it in @ 4 and it had 89 in it. 50-60% med. heavy/large, 15-20% med. and the rest perfect for jigging.

Yeah I got lucky with this place. Only thing is, I don't know the guy well and he is doing me a favor so I only plan on taking a couple trap-fulls so I don't leave him high and dry.  I have a few other spots that haven't yielded as much but it got me going until the ice left this other guys pond... so I will have to throw my trap more often in those places.  They are bigger spots though so having the trap in the right place determines if you get 2 or 20.

If it's a very small pond you might want to set 2 traps. One 6 inches from the surface and one dead on the bottom.

Take all the horn pout that go into the trap on the bottom and throw them as far into the woods as you can.  It may not get you 2,000 shiners this year, but you will be helping out the future populations.  You gotta leave some though or else it messes up the balance... but the horned pout are the reason behind only getting 1-2 in your trap. In a 1 acre pond theres probaly 10,000+ horned pout just chowing on the shiners all day.

Thats my theory at least because I've had it happen too.  Some ponds you only get a few shiners, but tons of horned pout each time. Others you get 50+ shiners and not a single horned pout.

Hit the MOTHERLOAD today!  :o I'm off from the tackle shop on Mondays and Tuesdays, so we usually get a little fishing in one day and trap bait the other. We've been doing some scouting around a bit over the last few weeks and today it paid off in spades. Along Ct river we found a tiny little feeder creek that ran under the road. I thought I was seeing things when we looked over the guard rail. I brought over 20 pounds of bait back to the shop. They ranged from pins to medium heavy sized bait.

Here is a quick video clip of one of the hauls...
