djholmes- You have to accrue five posts before you can see the "Reports & Conditions" pages.    And, YES, I have been out for smelt and got a few dozen earlier this week.  The ice was good up to the 25-30 yards from shore that i went out.  I have heard that the ice is thinner out deep, but I suspect this cold snap will take care of that for us.  I can't wait to get back out and get me some more smelt.  I love 'em.

Good luck!

Give the lake more time to make ice!!! I was there tonight to fish but was only there long enough to get on some really thin ice and leave. The ice is very inconsistent, 4" in somespots, 2" in others, and to 4" consisting of 2" white ice 1" of slush/water and 1" of black ice. If anyone goes out there take your spud and picks! Be safe!!

So, Canadice ice is still questionable?  After these wicked cold days & nights the lake isn't locked up yet?

The ones I have caught run pretty small on Canadice - probably 4"-6" and thin.

These are not the big ones we used to dip net in Lake Ontario back in the 70's and 80's.

They may be small, but they are yummy.  My wife and I got over 200 of them in an hour and a half last Tuesday night on Hemlock.  Here's what I did with them:

I've never been smelting on hard water. How is it done?
I used to go to Port Bay with my uncle as a kid in the spring with nets.

Shore ice will not be great but most likely ok to get on but if I were you I wouldn't take my wife to Canadice for her first time to get her hooked you most likely won't get anything unless you target pickerel on the south end then you might get a few.  There are much better places to hit where you will get into good catches of gills and or perch like conesus or sodus to keep her busy.
