there is 5-7 inches of ice if your fishing towards duluth i would try fish or island lake not sure which one but my uncle always does well there early he catches crappies and walleyes in the same spots but this time of year you can do pretty good on all the lakes up here

I graduated from UMD in May. I have only been ice fishing for a few years and have had a great time doing so. My experience with the Duluth area has been on Island Lake, Fish Lake, Pike Lake, and Caribou Lake. Pike was great for perch real early last year, then slowed down. (I got skunked at the Big Jig on Pike Lake!!)

We pulled in a bunch of Crappie, Northern and a few Walleyes on Caribou, then moved the shack out to Fish Lake were we then proceeded to call it "Fishless Lake." That really wasn't the best

This time of year you have many option up there. I would check out the four that I listed above and see what you think.
