best fishfinder for very shallow lakes?
« on: Dec 18, 2016, 09:23 PM »
I fish mostly shallow lakes in NE PA, typically with 6-10 ft of water and weeds. Thinking about getting an electronic fishfinder and like to see if you can recommend anything for these type of lakes. I don't need an expensive unit for deep lakes because I will rarely fish them. I need something that does the job in the shallow weedy lakes. Any recommendations?

More your cone angle rather than brand of flasher/graph. ;) ;)

If you have decent water clarity you might want to consider a camera.

Have the camera "aimed" down the hole.  You wouldnt have to put the camera down very far.  And allows you to sit back and watch.

If money is an issue or just wanna try a graph to mess with could get a portable humminbird like for boats for like 100 bucks and zip tie the transducer so it hangs straight in hole. Used one for years and it helped catch plenty of fish. Target separation not as precise as a flasher but definitely better than fishing blind.

What is your price point? I would suggest spending as much as you can afford. Lots of starter units out there, Lots of reviews. Keep in mind that most folks are very biased as to a particular brand of unit. Do your research and get what you can afford.

Vex FL-8 with the S cord for low power is a great entry level set up for shallow weeds.

My hummin bird. Fishin buddy always marked plenty of fish in shallow weedy water. The only thing is you cannot see your jig. But I was always able to catch fish. The are a little over 100$

With a camera try rigging it so it points up. You would be very surprised what you will see up instead of aimed down.

I am not looking into cameras , only flashers. Anyone any other thoughts? Don't want ot buy an expensive one for deep water and then not happy with the performance.

For the type of fishing your doing a fl8 with S-cable or a vx1p marcum will be fine
Look at the factory outlets stores , and reconditioned units ,

Early ice I've been staying shallow to not die.  I've had great success with a flx28 in low power mode. Mark fish in 4-10 feet of water
I fish a lot....I catch a little.

My FL 12 has low power weed mode. I use it in 4-6 fow. It marks fish. But the fishin buddy works just as well. In 4 fow or less. Flashers really serve no purpose for me.

Checkup humminbird  ice series lots of options for the price marcum lx1 vex fl8, watch Craigslist usually  people selling units t upgrade and definitely check vexilar site for reconditioned units great prices. I like the humminbrd ice 45 and 55 best features for big screen and easy to read but al the units will hel see fish and make the trip n the ice more fun. I wood say all of the entry level units Wil work god for shallow water

Ever tried sight fishing? If the water is clear enough, get into a shanty and black it out. Works great in low snow conditions on a sunny day. Loads of fun.

fl8 with s  cable.i would recommend other vexilar models but you don't need anything more than a fl8.
