Rinsing your reels before packing away
« on: Feb 27, 2016, 07:34 PM »
I know the saltwater guys do it but would it make sense to rinse my spinning reels off before packing them away for the season.  Just to get any dust or grunge off of them.  Anybody do this from time to time?

No. Saltwater reels are sealed.. All you are going to do is fill your reel full of moisture and possibly rust out your reels from the inside.

You can wipe off the outside with a standard alcohol pad if you want.

Most saltwater reels that people can afford are not sealed.  I rinse them down with a gentle stream from a hose after my 2 week vacation every year, remove the spool and rinse it too.  I back off on the drag for storage.

I never bothered with fresh water reels, unless they've got obvious blood and guts all over them.

When I have time, I clean the exterior surface of my reels.

I buy and sell  fishing gear all the time.so I clean my reels/gear inside and out.wipe the outside down with a wet rag and lube them before putting them away.better resale when stuff is taken care off and it last longer.i have over 50 penn reels and I try to stay away from buying ones used in saltwater and not cleaned properly.that salt is rough on the metal parts if not washed off and taken care of.
